One of my buddies, while a P-3 TACCO, had a nav who was not the brightest. On approach he had half the radios detuned for who knows why and was trying to talk to flight on ICS. My buddy starts yelling at him across the tube that flight was talking on the radio. To his horror he sees the nav select UHF and starts asking his question to flight on the radio.

One from the pros. Buzzing around the DC FRZ you are required to listen to Potomac approach so you get to hear all the airline calls for guys heading into DCA. One afternoon some fast-talking Joe from the Show comes on with…

PotomacAmerican123at20RiverOneapproachrequestingnorthswitchdirecttoone.

The whole thing took like five seconds to get out of his mouth - and sure enough approach calls back with “American 123, say again.”

Back comes; “PotomacAmerican123at20RiverOneapproachrequestingnorthswitchdirecttoone.” but this time it’s out in about three seconds.

This time the guy from approach comes back…”American 123, enter a left hold at Ditch and slow until we can understand you.”

Sure enough all the other pilots come on to fast-trash talk the American guy but switch to comically slow conversations with approach.

Maybe somewhat analogous, but I remember the story of an East Coast MEU doing some kind of joint training with a middle eastern partner...dog and pony show type stuff...well, the lead phrog dude thinks he's on ICS, but is going out on radio, and is saying (let's just say) undiplomatic things about our partner.

Student asks "Did she say turn to 370?"

Oh buddy.
That translates to 010 right? ☺️ ...did a whole flight as an HT stud where it was about radial intercepts (tail, radial, turn stuff...I guess that's still a thing) and it lasted about an hour of him berating me until I figured out he didn't know the difference between the head and tail of the needle. I think he gave me good marks, bc he realized what a dipshit he was.

Bearing pointers, RMI, BDHIs should not be a thing in 2025! FLY THE FUCKING MAGENTA LINE!!!!! 😎

That’s all well and good until you are getting pigeons from some FC and you’re doing point to points between several moving targets.
Shouldn’t your mission computer/FMS figure all that out for you? Data link, GPS, air data computer, basic trig and calculus. Present a magenta line of your PFD/MFD to fly from mom to DDG, etc.

I suppose in a perfect world Link 16 is working perfectly and no one is dropping out, so you could just hook select the contact and drop a nav point. I’ve rarely seen it especially going OTH at helo altitudes. That’s just an example.
The actual purpose of the radial intercept harassment is to develop an understanding of how to orient yourself in the goo based off a nav point. If you can’t grasp how the pointers should be swinging around (whether they’re glass or analog) do you really understand where you are and where you’re going?

Fair point :)

After my first LINK Trainer (yes) flight I learned about Wrong Way Corrigan.
