I just wish the media today would publish these stories more. The only time someone in the military makes the news today is if that someone's a woman/minority, captured, or involved in a scandal. Back in the day, everyone knew who Audie Murphy or Joe Basilone was, but nobody knows today's Jason Dunham or Raphael Peralta.

Just bought The Gift of Valor tonite. Cpl Dunham's CO was the MOI at Tech when I went through, and made sure we understood sacrifices being made by kids our age in shitty places while we were in Blacksburg living it up.

I know who both Audie Murphy and Joe Basilone are, but have never heard of Jason Dunham. Raphael Peralta sounds familiar, though. Actually, I read about his actions in a book on Fallujah recently. As a young person, I'm appalled that these names are unknown to my generation.

Off topic... But... Dude.. What's with the avatar?

If this was directed towards me... my fandom knows no boundaries and also infathomable sadness only surpassed by Notre Dame fans circa 2007.

CPL Dunham won the Medal of Honor for jumping on a grenade in a firefight in Husaybah, Iraq. He died from his wounds after using his kevlar to attempt to shield the rest of his squad from the blast.

Those Marines could teach the Frenchies a thing or two from their own history . . .

I know I might get blasted but....... :watching3 sir, your American history book could teach you a thing or two about the French involvement in aiding us in the fight for an independent nation. Forgetting they're our oldest ally?
Not wanting to stray from the topic though, hell yeah that's one bitchin story.

I believe the correct term is that he earned it.

NBC Nightly News had a pretty lengthy segment the other night about these guys:

Looks like the Army is getting in on the act (this may coincide with the thread about rates at which different services award medals. These silver stars all seem well-earned to me though): http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28190169

And while your complaint may have some validity I have seen plenty of coverage about valor in the recent wars. It may not be on the front page or the top of the news, but it certainly is there.

Im a little behind on the count but does that make 2 MOH for this campaign? I remember a SEAL received one, and this Marine, but were there any others that I missed?
