My sister is a PA in NY and she knows of no policy that requires a prescription to get tested.

My son-in-law is a grocery store manager and has had known multiple exposures and as well as being sick for over a month with extreme fatigue, loss of smell and loss of taste. Every time he has tried to get tested after an exposure, he has been turned away and told to come back with a note (prescription) from a doctor stating there are symptoms suggesting he has COVID or he could not be tested. The last time was about 3 weeks ago. Even when he had COVID, they would not test him. When he thought he had it, they turned him away and told him to just stay home with instructions to call them on the phone if the symptoms progressed. When they progressed, it was "yup you have it so no need to test you". He did get an antibody test about 2 months after he recovered from COVID that confirmed he had had it. But that was just because his store hired a testing agency and not because anything NY was willing to do.

I talked to my daughter and son-in-law today and they both said fuck it. She's vaccinated and if he gets exposed, she's protected. He's just going to quit worrying about passing COVID on to and not worry about exposures. He's pretty safe with having had it and the states doesn't seem to give a fuck accept to restrict access to testing and testing while telling people to stay home. It's ridiculous. I completely agree with him.

You can't pull this vaccine passport shit without everyone having unobstructed equal access to the vaccine. That's not happening.

Cuomo killed people, is a bully and a piece of shit. He is an idiot and his policies are ridiculous.

Dr. Fauci is an idiot too. There is probably a very good reason he doesn't have an actual practice with patients. He goes in whatever direction the wind is blowing and will say whatever the person in charge of him wants. He loves the stoplight and will do or say whatever it takes to keep it shining on him.

Obviously not going to deny your son-in-law's experiences, but there is no NY state government policy that he has to have a note/prescription to get tested.

Many doctors offices are turning people away over the last year for acute illnesses all over the country. It's actually quite annoying that people who swore an oath to treat the sick are using the pandemic as an excuse to not do it. I'd probably be more pissed if I had to pay a share of the thousands of dollars it cost to take my kids to the ER for ear infections vice the few hundred or so it would cost to go to their pediatrician, but the pediatrician was only doing well visits and refused (and still does refuse) to see anyone for outpatient care.

Again, it's a vaccine or a negative test within the last 72 hours. And it's to attend relatively large events. The wording of the headline is awful since it implies something that is mandatory for every day life when we're actually talking about people who want to go to a Yankee game next week.

I'm no fan, but this might be a little overstated. He certainly didn't seem to say whatever the previous POTUS wanted him to.

I think the real problem with Fauci is that it's a case of the fox running the hen house. Quack or not, the pandemic has turned him into a household name, and it's all too easy to feed that public fear monster when it's keeping him in the limelight. Keeping people fearful of the virus keeps him installed as the "hero" of the day, despite a lot of conflicting guidance that keeps people guessing and divided (which also keeps the fear alive). I doubt he actually wants society to stay closed forever, but I am equally sure he is enjoying the importance and attention this issue brings.

The double-mask thing is where he really jumped the shark, IMO. Meanwhile the CDC says kids can be 3 feet apart at school. Good job, guys, way to get a cohesive message together.

I feel like a lot of the complaints a lot of us are making about the public health policy community are due to the scope of their work, vs what we perceive it to be. Wrong or right, they have a laser focus on minimizing any risk whatsoever. It is not in their interest to take other (real) things into account. Sort of like how if I were boat king for a day, everything would be perfect for FW tacair carrier ops accomplishing my little mission and everyone else can go get fucked. Or on the note of 0 risk, how many maintenance departments would love to cut a deal with Ops that we never fly again and thus no broken jets? We joke about it, but that is an another example of zero risk focus. I've seen mx departments, albeit unsuccessfully, attempt to lobby for lesser agreements along the lines of that thought process.

Also I don't actually think the only important mission on the CVN is my own......lest I make anyone sad face. I just say that to illustrate a point of what happens when you give narrowly focused specialists carte blanche to make up whatever rules best suits their mission. In the case of Fauci and others, that mission was 0 infections, 0 deaths. Not arguing that they even went about that part in the best manner, but I do think that is what they were trying to do. It takes no account of the bigger picture is I guess what I'm trying to say.

Exactly. Post 9-11, everyone wanted to reduce terrorist attacks/casualties (not directly comparing COVID deaths to 9/11 deaths). If Homeland Security or state police - with a mandate to drive these to zero - proposed mandatory tracking apps on everyone's phones (to be checked when you enter an arena with the potential for mass casualties), nationwide curfew and door-to-door National Guard searches for people unknown to the town, many people would object regardless of the intent (just like they rightly did with mass surveillance abuses, etc.) Some of these policy disagreements boil down to a disagreement not on science/effectiveness, but whether the intent always justifies the means.

The same people that think presenting identification to vote is unacceptable are now encouraging the use of a COVID passport app to be “allowed” to go to venues or restaurants or wedding receptions. People scrambling to be controlled is a lot scarier than scaryvirus ever was.

This from the state where the national guard is waiting when the plane lands to examine your paperwork before letting you proceed from the gate area to the terminal... not a shocker.
