USN CVN-82 & 83

The carrier is also a unique place in the DoD, where every sailor performs some function (and many officers as well), that enables a relatively small group of officers to accomplish the mission of the entire carrier. So I guess that is to say that our traditional sense of officers supporting enlisted folks is a little flip flopped. At least in an operational/combat ops sense. That doesn't negate your point, just saying that the whole perspective on a CVN is pretty counter to your experience in the USMC. One might argue, justifiably so at times, that the O's headed across the beach might have priority over everyone else on the ship, O and E alike.
The U.S. Navy is the only service that shoots its officers at the enemy.

That did happen for the first flyable atmospheric STS orbiter. But I know you know that ya TPS nerd!

Indeed. I think I did get my story legitimately mixed up with the shuttle Enterprise. Which raises even more confusion in my mind about keeping an historic ship name, then naming one after a decorated sailor, then it’s back to the oligarchy. The only convention seems to be inconsistency.

In case the rocket failed.
I figured it was to roll up the launch ramp- but maybe we’re both right.

They got the tow tug disconnected before lighting the fuse at least.

Today at 8th & I, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced USS McClung (LSM 1) as the name for the first ship in the new McClung-class of medium landing ships.

This name honors U.S. Naval Academy graduate and Public Affairs Officer Major Megan McClung, USMC, who was killed in action while serving in Iraq.
