OCS December 2016 IWC Board

Mine is a sad story. First I signed up one some www.usnavyocs.com web site that had no information and just found air warrior recently. I wish I came across this site then I would have known a lot. I have a Bachelors in Computer Science from a good university and a Masters in Information Systems. I was dual processed so I already signed up for reserve / E-3 with a delayed entry until the officer package is processed for this December board. I would prefer to go officer because from my current job it will be a pay cut from $98K to 22K going as E-3 reserve as opposed to Officer Ensign $35K (Not including BAH and other stuff). I have not heard from my recruiter yet. I have a 3.1 UG and 3.4 grad but my processor recalculated my GPA since apparently official GPA on transcript did not factor the general education classes I transferred from the community college which brought my GPA down to 2.99. Anyway, my OAR score was 54. I have not heard from the Officer recruiter yet. I am guessing it is a prorec -N. Seems like I will go in as reserve E-3 and drain my rainy day fund until I am done with Basic and A School and go back to Civilian Job. But it is not about the money and it is worth it for me because I am a naturalized citizen and I will feel better that I am actually giving back to this country.

Non-STEM degrees are still an outlier when it comes to IWC selections whether a person is prior or not, sometimes with non stem selections it is just plain luck that one great application gets picked over another, non-STEM application make up the vast majority of IWC submissions but make up only 40% of selections (per RUFIO's other post more like 30% on the last board).
Those are two degrees that actually aren't really desired by IWC. Folks have a way better chance with a degree say engineering than a Poli Sci/Liberal arts.

Aside from your degree and travel experience there had to have been other factors (high OAR, professional interview) that attributed to the selection. Knowing Arabic might have helped but not as much as you think.
I haven't seen the stats from the latest board, but stats from previous boards would suggest that intel has been the exception to that. While the IWC as a whole wants STEM degrees, intel in particular generally doesn't, and a poli sci degree isn't going to hurt an applicant who wants to be an 1830. If you just want to be an 18XX your odds are better with a technical background, but someone who is specifically interested in intel probably shouldn't assume that a non-STEM degree will hurt his or her application. Those 40% non-STEM degrees are almost all getting picked up for intel.

BTW Rufio, Would the Recruiters have been told who were the 18 that would be looked at next board? Also, my recruiter told me only 12 out of 266 were selected which is obviously different from your numbers. I don't mean/want to question anybody for a liar, but if you read my posts from a couple boards back...my recruiter has been known to commit some major fails in the past which NavyOffRec attested to as well. Morever, each time I talk to him, it seems like he has no clue who I am and mistakes my info. Two boards back my packet didn't make it to board and the recruiter blamed it on the processor. Then the Sept. board I was told my application was "tabled" to the Dec. board, which makes me also question why they would table it and then give me a Pro Rec N...why wouldn't they just have rejected me in Sept. instead of making me wait until December? Maybe this is like the HIGHLY ENCOURAGED applicants you mention? I wasn't made aware that I could make any improvements between the the Sept. board and Dec. board however.

Thanks for sharing. Repping the other Poli Sci degrees out there, I was selected for Intel. So, if you're non-STEM and interested in Intel, don't be discouraged. For other designators, I can't say anything. Also to the second note, I was tabled as well at the September board. I improved my OAR score before the December Board. Perhaps apply again if you were tabled but improve your application with that time you have between Boards.

We have said that in some of these post where they tend to use their non STEM allocation on 1830's but even then don't pick all non STEM for them, RUFIO put out that the last round was more like 30% non STEM vice 40%. The thing is that while the overall selection may be say 10% the non-STEM applicants have it much worse and the STEM applicants have it much better since non-STEM applicants way outnumber STEM applicants.

I just checked mine and finally pulled into a liberty port and saw this.

N – Not professionally recommended/Not best qualified by the community requested.
Y – Professionally recommended. **There is no further action is required on the member’s part. This is not a select at this point.**

Status - N

Alwell, maybe next time.

They upped the min GPA, yours was just above the minimum several years ago so you might be under the minimum now.

I think it is now 2.8 but the average is 3.5 with most at or over 3.5
Thank you, I had a 3.1 gpa BA Physical Education with my major exercise physiology, but I graduated in 2007 prior to enlisting...I have a 4.0 right now through 3 Masters courses for Cyber Security, will that gpa pull any weight? And is there a way to find out if we are one of the applications being held for the next board?

ask the NRC fleet processor, it will bump it up but for reference if you completed a full Masters degree with a 4.0 it would boost your overall GPA to 3.4 so those classes you have taken now will have a little effect but not much.

I would recommend you put Intel first, IP second next time if you were a N this time.

Yesterday I saw the list of those selected for intel. My recruiter showed it to me. Your recruiter should definitely have an answer for you. I can tell you that most people came from the New England Office. Jill, who posted earlier, was on the list.

Thanks for responding, I'll definitely reach out to my recruiter again ASAP. The wait is killing me.
