Decided on NFO Contract

I started the thread the other day to ask about the NFO job, thanks for all of your responses and advice first off. I spoke with my Gunny and Captain today and they understood me wanting to fly and promised that if I go to OCS this summer he will switch me over to Pilot contract once I am back because I have stuck with the program so long and have gone no where. I have the motivation but don't not so much the PFT (270 ish) Proud of myself considering a year ago when I started the program a 250 PFT was just a dream to me. I scored well on my ASTB and have a 3.3 GPA so those two things and a determined attitude are all I got going for me. Unfortunately those aren't much to the Marine Corps but we will see on April 5th.

you know what a verbal promise will get you in the military, a story to tell on how you were screwed out of something.

well I hope he is not willing to look like a scumbag. If its a lie then I can say SEE YA LATER! No commitment for PLC. I do trust the mans words though

He might, but anyone that has been in the military will tell you if it isn't in writing then who knows?

Like I said though, I don't have to commission. I can say goodbye and go work for the railroad if it happens. I appreciate you looking out for me though, because I do know that stuff happens quite a bit.

"I didn't lie, the truth changed." Over and over and over again. Speaking of, better check to see if I've gotten hard orders yet...

well at least I won't feel like a loser that never got to go
True, but you will have taken a slot from someone that really wanted to be an NFO. The right thing (at least in my eyes) is not to accept the contract for something you're not willing to do.

I agree, however my Captain is an honest guy so if I get selected I will have a pilot spot when I get back. Right now I am not concerned with anything because I do not feel confident about getting selected.

On his side he is considered with his numbers. If he can get you to sign today and go to OCS, then his numbers are good, and he will probably sort out the pilot/nfo/whatever thing later.

I'm curious if you don't accept a commission if that reflects on him or not.

Either way, OCS sucks hard enough that you shouldn't do it unless you are willing to commission afterwards.

thats a good question, that would sure be a reason for him to switch my contract if me declining would hurt his evaluation or however they get rated. I know OCS sucks but it would look good on a resume if I end up getting a civilian job.

Not as good as having actually served in the Marine Corps.
