Engineering Duty Officer DCO Reserves Questions.

Good Afternoon everyone,

Ive been scrolling through the Airwarriors forum but can't seem to find any information that I'm curious about. Also if this is the wrong thread to ask these questions let me know.

Im wanting to apply for a Direct Commission into the Navy for an Engineering Duty Officer slot. I have B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in business and im about a 1/3 of the way through my M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering program. However I need about a years more of work experience to be qualified for the program. What I'm wanting to know is does your Job experience matter? If so, since I have about a year more till qualification are met, what job would help me stand out as a candidate .
Im currently a Controls and Instrumentations Engineer as a NASA contractor. I also currently hold a clearance from my previous job as a contractor doing the same role but for the Air Force.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum! A quick note... intro posts asking general eligibility questions are usually discouraged here, since most of this info already exists in the threads. Definitely take time to dig through past posts using the search function; the "Navy Reserve" section is especially helpful.

That said, yes, job experience matters for DCO.

Also, do yourself a favor and Google “Reserve EDO Program Authorization”. That document lays out exactly what you need in terms of education and work experience — it’s very clear and cuts through a lot of the speculation.

Lastly, reach out to your local Navy Reserve Officer Recruiter. They’ll confirm where you stand and how best to stay competitive. Good luck!

My apologies, I'll be sure to dig a little deeper next time. That was exactly what I was needing! Thanks for the help!
