I was told "if you want to wash your g-suit be sure and plug up the hose and tape it real good....but as for everything else...yeah we don't wash it." Doesn't surprise me, we officially(I've seen the documents) have the most lazy PR shop in the military.

As for gloves, I've always worn them, to some extent. I'm one of those finger-tip-cutter-offers but I didn't start doing it till Advanced. Even then I still strategically did my best not to let IP's see I had done it..though all but one could've cared completely less. The one....just so happens my class advisor...would give me shit about it, so much that if I flew with/against him I always had a full fingered set in my "locker" to use...and even then, I didn't wear them in flight.

Pertaining to my very last sentence in my last paragraph, if you ever cut the fingers off your gloves, you will NEVER be able to wear full gloves when you fly, EVER. I've tried and I just can't.

Lol.....gents, no need to look into my previous post so deeply. I was seriously just curious if this means we don't have to wear the gloves in the VT's? Nothing to do w/ a slow x-list on start-up or complaining about the Turboweenie being too hot (yes, it's really not that bad).....I don the gloves and unroll sleeves well before I even get in the aircraft so as to be ready to start when I get in.

In the training command, roll down your sleeves and wear your gloves. What you do in the fleet may or may not differ. You'll have to decide how much risk you want to take, and I'm not just talking about the aircraft-type kind of risk.

So does the paraloft/equipment issue ever wash our vests (and other equipment for you jet folks)?

What they do in Corpus, I have no idea, but yes, on the 90 day, vests are supposed to washed. I've had to wait for mine to come out of the washer as an IP and I've also seen the AWs washing them on a no fly day underway.

Just because you get a stinky loaner doesn't mean it doesn't get washed, it just hasn't been washed yet.

Agreed. It's too damn hard to flip pages of paper with gloves on. Approach plates, stacks of target area imagery, kneeboard cards, etc. I can't stand not being able to thumb through stuff or find buttons on feel alone. I'll take the .00000001% chance that I burn my hands in an ejection without the gloves to make the hundreds of hours I have in the Hornet that much easier.

And I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I've tried a couple of times to fly without gloves and just can't. My hands just feel "weird" with out them...no other explanation for it. Do I wear them because I'm afraid of them getting burned? No way! It's just habit at this point. Flipping pages in an approach plate isn't an issue, nor is finding buttons...I can find them by "feel" just fine...it may be a difference in cockpit design too. Critical switches in close proximity are either shaped differently or are moved in different directions. Of course, flight currency plays a role too.

Although I just recently cut my fingertips (and thus have limited experience with it), I can't figure out why I didn't do it earlier. More protection than no gloves and all the dexterity and tactile feel you need.

And even better I learned early on that when you cut the finger tips off, turn them inside out and put a little bead of super glue on the threads. That way they won't come unraveled completely in like 4 months like my first pair did. I've literally been flying with the same pair for like 2 years, and they are broken in outstandingly.

Fantastic idea. I cut the only pair of gloves I've ever worn (so they were pretty busted before) and they are already unraveling.

I used to be just like this. I even wore my gloves in the simulator because it felt weird without them. Once I started flying FCFs, and worse yet, started flying combat sorties with literally hundreds of pages in various pubs/smartpacks to flip through, it just became too much of a pain to deal with. You'll see. If you can wear them and efficiently manage the paper in our "paperless cockpit", then good on you.

By the way, the Hornet and Harrier cockpits/switchology are nearly identical.

Achmed: "Muhammad!"

Muhammad: "What?"

Achmed: "I need you to go find the filthy infidel pig who just ejected near here."

Muhammad: "How am I supposed to do that?"

Achmed: "Follow your nose. He'll smell like this." *Sprays Febreze*

Muhammad: "And the Americans accuse us of being in the closet."

I had a room mate who did, but it was a good thing. If he didn't, he probably would have been forcefully ejected from the room.

No gloves? Were you about to engage in shipboard recovery?...;)
In all honesty, do most of you guys in the fleet fly without gloves the majority of the time?
In the spirit of beating more dead horses to death ....

I wore my gloves when it was cold. I didn't wear them when it wasn't operationally necessary. I never wore them during shipboard launch/recovery.

You bet your money -- you take your chances. :)
