EOD Officer?

Well, I got a little excited when I read that Officer Candidates with language skills are welcomed, and that you can commission until age 31; then I read that I need to have already been enlisted as an EOD. Technician to have any real chance. Damn. I am 29 looking at other officer designators, where I can use my prior service (CTI) nd PT skills to my advantage, if I can't get into IDC. I was always OUTSTANDING On the PRT and maintaining. Any suggestions?

If IDC says no then your best options are SWO or NFO just from the numbers of spots available.

If EOD is your heart's desire, you've got a better shot at it by going SWO, kicking ass and pissing excellence and then applying to redes. Not saying you'd have a good shot, mind, but better odds than coming in off the street.

EOD, like all the rest of the green Navy, just doesn't need very many new officers each year and prefers to promote from within. And they pick their best to commission. So why would they take a kid they don't know over a known quantity and proven tech who doesn't need to be retrained?

The risk of going SWO and trying to redes is that you're rolling the dice on what the navy will need by the time you can redes (ie, after you get your pin). The better money is on going aviation. I can count on one hand the guys I know who voluntarily redesed out of Air.

Hey all, I'm not in the EOD career field, but I just submitted a package for this past September's board. Prior to applying, I talked to the OCM and he said that lateral xfer's from SWO or another designator is getting extremely difficult to do with EOD. IWhopeful, have you looked into the age waiver? The OCM told me that they give age waivers up to 31 I believe. Also some of the prior service EOD officer's I've met weren't prior enlisted technicians, but were air rescue swimmers or navy divers, so you don't have to be a prior enlisted EOD tech to have a shot.

They have recently changed the rules on who can apply, and on the age waivers it was put out by the board several years ago that the age waiver was their to allow those with experience in the field to apply longer.

There are some "cool guy" gigs for SWOs out there too. I finagled (sp?) my way into VBSS, Special Boat Unit, and ANGLICO. As a result, I'm probably the crappiest SWO out there, but I'm still proud to have served and earned my pin. You can never count on getting a redesig, but do well on your first SWO tour and it's the best shot you've got. Good luck!

The community made a drastic shift a while back (2005/6) and started sending Ensigns to EOD school. Since then, lat transfers are like unicorns. They did the same thing on the enlisted side. It use to be reverse, when I came in you had to be E-5 or above to go to EOD school or an O-2 with a Div-O tour under your belt and SWO quald. But they have been trying to more closely align with the NSW career path and now prefer young, inexperienced types that have not been "tainted" by the surface force.

except they no longer take those into OCS that are civilians, so they will be in the USN in some capacity

After you get warfare qualified, do these types of opportunities open up to you? I'm really confused as to how a normal SWO finds these opportunities? Is it someone's job within the Navy to let people know what openings there are? Forgive my ignorance, I ship to OCS as a SWO this fall so I havn't figured this stuff out yet

How'd you get a tour with a Special Boat Unit? I thought those didn't exist? They are like Sasquatch, everybody knows a guy who knows a guy who's had that tour but no one ever actually gets those orders.

Awaiting my commission in May
I apologize for resurrecting a somewhat old thread, but I was wondering if there is any current or new statistics on the chances of going EOD via OCS or the best route to get there if OCS is your only option. My first choice is to fly helos if I can swing it, but I want to be in doing something no matter what, so I am looking for info regarding other options.

EOD primarily takes from their own, meaning enlisted to officer. Your best chances to be an officer will be aviation assuming you can pass the ASTB and medical exam.

It is far, far.....far far far far more selective than intel. Maybe 1 or 2 for OCS per year and I believe they are generally all prior enlisted EOD.

I just posted to say you missed two more "fars." Its pretty absurd......we had 1 unicorn out of several OCS classes go EOD and her whole story was kinda strange.....

I sent a guy to OCS that was EOD years ago before they started changing the requirements, I believe a few years ago they changed it to essentially eliminate anyone going EOD that wasn't prior service or prior EOD.
