Damn. Kudos to FAA investigators and what they do.
NTSB investigators.
This is an eerie coincidence to have such a rare material failure while at ASO literally talking about this very subject: stress risers, fatigue failure, etc. It's baffling how there doesn't appear to be any signs of corrosion, cracks, or other stress risers. I wonder if there's more being done at the materials lab under microscopy to see how the fatigue failure propagated, or if the EI stuff has already been completed.
Where did you read that? The prelim says no visual signs of corrosion or prior defect was noted. I expect more detailed investigation will find something.
"2). None of the surfaces exhibited visible evidence of corrosion or other preexisting damage. The right wing also exhibited fatigue cracks in the lower spar cap at the same hole location extending up to 0.047-inch deep."
