I'm gonna go way back here with Gettysburg. Excellent portrayal of Chamberlain. Then there has to be Platoon.

Non war movies-
A Few Good Men
Rules of Engagement

And don't hate because Basic is the most realistic, bestest movie ever :icon_smil

I've got to second, third, and fourth Gettysburg. I own the movie on DVD and still can't watch the bayonet charge on Little Round Top without getting goosebumps. Joshua L. Chamberlain is a personal hero of mine and Jeff Daniels NAILED the part.

"Stand firm, ye boys of Maine, for not once in a century are men permitted to bear such responsibilities!"

Also, unless we're limiting it to big-screen only, I'll have to put in a plug for Rough Riders. Great portrayal of another personal hero of mine with Tom Berenger as Theodore Roosevelt. Didn't even recognize Berenger till I saw his name in the credits.

Very good, Quizno/Meridian STUD/Grasshopper ... and while we're talking inspiring bayonet charges --- how about "The Wind and the Lion"??? Some of you may not know about it --- it was based on a true event around the turn of the century (last one) and Teddy was President.

... Great period weapons --- typical John Milius direction ...

The same guy did that movie as well as "Rough Riders" --- John Milius --- writer, director, NRA Board Member for many, many years. He always gets the armament and the military "spirit of the moment" right. "Wind" features a mixed 200 man landing team of Marines and Sailors quick-stepping at high port through Tangiers to the palace of the Bashaw of Tangier and taking it at the point of the bayonet --- great, inspiring stuff. Hard to stay in your seat.

I know nothing about bayonet fighting other than dueling with pugil sticks on 2nd class summer cruise during Marine orientation. One of my fellow upperclassmen who was at Khe Sahn (and on the evening news -- I saw him talking about a battle -- nearly choked on my college TV dinner) led a bayonet charge against some NVA trenches during the seige and was being interviewed on camera as a result. Years later, he told me and some others during a reunion that "there is no emotion in this world that can compare with what it feels like to lead a platoon of U.S. Marines in a bayonet charge against an enemy". Sadly, he died years too early from cancer -- they got sprayed many times during his tours in S Vietnam with Agent Orange.

I have fond memories of watching Milius's Rough Riders as a kid, though I ended up losing the tape. Wish they'd release it on DVD.

Paths to Glory was great.

Honestly Ive seen other WWI era movies like the Blue Max and The Lost Brigade, and something just seems so wrong about watching a WWI era movie in color. And its probably the only film where I find myself actually chearing for the French. It also has alot of the feeling of just how hopelessly lost the men in the trenches were.

Has anyone suggested how amazingly great the possibility of a JAG movie could be? Its a porno staring myself as Raab, and Catherine Bell as Mac

Yes. I am a Pirate.
How about Dark Blue World? It is about Czech fighter pilots who fly with the RAF in the Battle of Britain, gets a little mushy with the love interest but still a good movie.

You know, I am surprised that no one mentioned the Patriot or Gods and Generals or Dr. Strangelove or 1941 or K-19 or To-ra To-ra To-ra.
