Anyone else going to Purdue? I had SUNY Maritime as a back up but it looks like everything for Purdue is good to go. Submitting everything to STA-21 this week, already talked to Ed straten to make sure all the classes I needed on my degree plan. Now just waiting for orders and continuing to keep trucking until May. I'm currently in southeast GA. Everyone from northeast FL or southeast GA let me know how you are getting to NSI. Trying to figure out whether I should fly or take a road trip. - Jake

I am going to Purdue, Nursing Program. I paid my deposit last week! We are going up there at the end of the month to do some house hunting. Are you from that area?

did you read this whole thread? http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144972&p=596141&viewfull=1#post596141

Check this out.... http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/cpque...r_n=hr288.111&db_id=111&item=&sel=TOC_480067&

kind of sucks for the FY-10 and beyond class, but you'll still get bars. To the poster who asked about the choice between MECP and STA-21, I'd sit down and look at the pay vs. time in (if the MECP counts towards retirement).

I just read that bill, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like it's only saying the (upto) three years you spend getting your degree does not count toward your eligibility for retirement . USC 10 states that for all active duty officers is 10 years commissioned (or you retire at your enlisted paygrade) and minimum # of years at certain grade (differs per rank), so you can't retire as an O-3E after 6 years of commission.

Question for prior alternates:
I'm starting my FY-11 package since Ed Straten said all the primaries reported to NSI already. What did you guys put for date of disenrollment on the online app? Mr. Straten said there's no date of disenrollement but the online app requires one if you explain you were a prior year alternate.

That's a tough question that deserves some research because of two things:

1) LDO's have to agree to a ten-year commitment when commissioned, but that's to retain their skill set for a finite period of time. Basically, they don't want a 17-year Chief to commission and then retire 3-4 years later as a LTJG/LT. If after those ten years they have 25+ years of service, then they are eliglble for 25+ years of retirement benefits.

2) MOST STA-21 guys aren't going to have 14 years in when they get picked up. If you join at 18, that makes you 32. There aren't that many options open for 32 year olds in the program. I would have to say that since most STA-21 people have <10 years in, there isn't a specific rule written anywhere for them. I know that most of my friends plan on doing 20 years as an officer anyway, making the 10 year thing a moot point.

My situation is an example of this. I have will have 13 years in this July. I will graduate in May of 2013. So by the time I can retire (with 10 years as an officer) I will have 26 years total time in service. Hopefully I will be able to make it to 30 years somehow.

If you ever question if it is worth it to stick out the extra few years or just revert back to your enlisted pay grade to be able to retire early crunch the numbers at this site. https://staynavytools.bol.navy.mil/RetCalc/Default.aspx
The retirement just blows me away! Check out what a LCDR or CDR with 26 or 30 years makes.

I am 31 right now and can't believe I could retire at 44 or 48 and make about $90K a year in retirement! THAT is motivation!

No, actually I'm from South Florida. I just wanted to try some new scenery, been in GA just a little too long. I was thinking about going to UF but by the time I got back from sea after the results came out it would've been too late to get everything to them. I researched other universities and Purdue has a great Mechanical Engineering program so I figures let's do it. Now just waiting on orders. I'll probably do my house hunting leave sometime in April haven't decided yet.

just looking at base pay today an O-4 makes 50% more than an E-8 with the same amount of service. Also don't forget you need two years time in grade as a LCDR or 3 years as a CDR before you can retire at that rank, or you retire one rank lower. Either way, at 30 years you will be making probably 3-4 times in retirement than if you retire at 20 reverted to your enlisted retirement, what bigger incentive do you need?
