Was it on a Friday last year? I stand corrected. Either way, admin still doesn't work on Friday afternoons.......JK

Seriously though, I sincerely hope the numbers are higher this year but I am not expecting anything different from last year. From a mere budgeting perspective this program doesn't make much sense. There are so many out of work college grads right now that the Navy recruiters are most likely having an easy time filling quotas and turning good candidates away. Why would the Navy bean counters want to spend the money to send us to school when there are $500 billion in budget cuts taking effect in January? Yes, we all have unique backgrounds within the Navy that would arguably give us a leg up on the non mustang types but is it worth the added cost? I sure hope someone important thinks so, but.........Regardless, I'll keep applying until I finish my degree or am too old. Worst case scenario, each of us have most likely worked harder and been recognized more often within our commands for our efforts simply because we have had our eyes set on acceptance into this program. That alone is worth the effort in my opinion.

Good outlook. This is definitely an attitude to emulate by every one in the Navy.

I am still optimistic about the program outlook despite the current budget problems. Last year there were 75 selectees all receiving only 10k/year for tuition (plus the salary they were already receiving), which is only 750k for the year. In the grand scheme of things, 750k is peanuts, and all 75 of those STA selectees will be put through school for less than the price of 1 helicopter (air people this is sort of a guess but I think I'm right).

The Navy will continue to need Officers and STA is a great source of them. In several of the options STA candidates make more sense than new college grads, because in those options the STA candidate is already fully qualified in the warfare specialty for which he/she is applying. The Navy can then invest in the education and commission of sailors who have already made it through the training so the possibility of not making it through training is not even a concern.

These are just my opinions, but they are the reasons I am still optimistic about the numbers. I am in the same boat as you and will keep applying until accepted (this year is my 2nd). Once you've determined this is your career path it's tough to accept any other outcomes. Good luck!

I agree with this logic. One of the biggest problems with recruiting is attrition. I would imagine that the attrition rate amongst officer candidates under STA-21 is significantly lower than traditional ROTC scholarships. Of course, that is just a guess...

last year before results came out they updated the brief on the STA-21 website, also the results on bupers showed up way after the NAVADMIN in which case would be relased via message traffic before posting on the web site... The thought process that $750,000 dollars is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things is exactly the type of thinking that has gotten our government into $16 trillion + debt.

Your background in specwar does have a legitmate arguement along with some other designators such as Nuke and CEC maybe. However, many of the options don't require specific backgrounds. ie. Pilot, NFO, Intel, SWO, Nurse Corp etc. These options don't require specific enlisted backgrounds. I would say that we are both correct based on last years numbers. All of the options with no specific enlisted sources were down in numbers while Nuke had very high selection rates. I think this info backs your thoughts up about cost benefit analysis for certain options aw well as mine in a general sense.
