Well, looks like that word on some of DORs going to the CENTCOM AOR has made it down here. Appearently one of the flight management LTs was saying that, and this last API class to start got the info during their inbriefing... they didn't say all DORs are getting shipped out though, just some...

the wheel? wtf.... I haven't touched that thing since API or maybe RIGS in primary. Calculate it in your head or WAG it... no time to be playing with a wheel. That, and I probably have less than a clue how to use it now.
To know how to use it for the IGS flight plan test it's by OPNAV instruction for ALL fleet squadrons, so if your squadron is not following that better dust it off 'cause chances are you will have to sooner or later, it certainly cought me off guard when I had to after more than 5 years without using it!!!

What is the reference for that requirement?

Oh yeah, hold on I have that memorized....c'mon, call OPNAV and tell them that you're WAGGin' your TAS and ETE's on IGS, I'm sure they'll be more than willing to give you the reference or maybe tell you why.

Zippy is right - DORs are no longer able to just 'get out' and not have to pay anything back. They are getting sent to do ***** work somewhere.

My API class was told about the three most recent DOR's - one going to Afghanistan, one going to Iraq, and one to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

We were told that if you weren't sure you wanted to be there, to come talk to someone - but no one (BOLTC, A-Pool, API so far) has suggested any of us DOR.

Bottom line - DOR right now and you get to spend a coupla years working on a job that will take you nowhere...

The IGS test in the rag, did not use the wheel at all. All the numbers were pre-spun. we just had to figure out what route to use.

Well, I don't know what kind of IGS programs you helo guys are running, but I have never, ever heard of any such thing in TACAIR, so when someone claims that an OPNAV requirement exists, especially one that sounds suspect, I'd like a reference so I can call BS, or learn something new if it is, in fact, legit.

Good times,

Yes, that's right, all Helo IGS do (or will) a full flight plan test to meet what OPNAV 3710 calls an approved course, three days long, my last squadron was required to change IGS right after I left because of this. The source of the requirement or why the change I don't know. But it's a fact, and it's the most painful part of the test, if you guys are not doing it then lucky you, it used to be a one day deal before.
And hey, I never ever heard of that either until about a year and a half ago.

Dude, your major doesn't matter at all. I was a fine arts major and I graduated in the top third of my class. Just get in the books and you'll be fine. Also, don't worry about studying "ahead". As for the whiz wheel, if you are an NFO, you'll use it mainly during primary and then junk it after that. If you are good with easy math, then you will never need it again.
