Helo Crash Video

can't watch that video without thinking how horrible that is. Yes, flying without a tail rotor sucks, not impossible to survive a landing but not like that... just a shame.

That is why I used to call all the ass-clowns that said if they were not 500'-80KT they were going to do a cut gun, out on it.

I'll take a BAD but survivalble auto over attempting to do a spinning cut gun from 100+ feet.

Nothing good happens without a tailrotor. I don't know the story behind the OP video. Doesn't look survivable.

I never understood how people could brief that. You could get some interesting verbal gymnastics out of 60S instructors when you asked them to justify using the 'hover' procedure for loss of drive from the 90 at Imperial Beach. You already don't have enough energy: no sense throwing what you have away....

<----- Plenty good happens w/o a tailrotor. Just not in a helo.

I'm saying if the fireball did not get them, the freefall from 150+ feet did.

I had 2 of 3 HACs on my 1st cruise tell me that if we were 450 and 100Kt, we were cut-gunning it.

500-80 was non-negotiable with them.

:)^^ I can't argue your point MB. You'll be tail rotorless soon.

I'm guessing by context that HAC is Helo A/C commander? For those of us who don't know sh!t...

We have untested urban legends in the 53 as well when it comes to t/r drive failures. Guys talking about reaching up and securing the speed control levers while spinning, calling out hovering if the auto is bad, etc.

Problem is, if you don't get down, main rotor blades start smacking each other or the fuselage....then explosion time. I don't see how a 100ft auto/cut gun is recoverable.

Does that kill all your tendency to spin (w/o TR), or is there some left over in the rotor head as it spins. That's a poorly worded question, but do you get my jist?

Nothing like taking a foolish position and defending it to the death. I'm glad I was a CAT II so I could give a polite "no thanks" to their theories.

The arbitrary cut-off of 500'/80kts comes from the fact that there are two Loss of Tail Rotor Drive EPs. One for alt/airspeed sufficient to enter an auto, and one for not. The problem comes from people taking the 500' minimum for practicing autorotations as a minimum for performing an auto.
