Helo Dunker Video

I was procrastinating studying for my midterms this week and I happened across a video of the helo dunker (not the one in P'Cola I don't think but the same idea). It definitely set my mind at ease a little when I saw how quickly they were out and up. Hopefully it'll do the same for some of my fellow pool rocks.

LOL...it won't seem that fast when you're doing it (time compression effect), but don't let that worry you...you'll get the gouge on what to do. Poor slobs on right side of video get the "up and over ride"...always a treat with water up your nose and having to wait until totally submerged to release.

It looks just like the one down here in P-cola... I think it is...

But yeah.. its not that bad. Just stay calm and remember what the instructors tell you... reference points, hand-over-hand movements and don't panic. Also, wait till the dunker settles before you unstrap... they'll tell you to count 3-potato before gettin out. If you unstrap to early, you'll ride again.

Watch out for seat number 7. Not so bad with your eyes open. Things get a little tricky in that seat with the blacked out goggles though. Not that you can see much without the goggles anway. All in all, a great time.

If I remember correctly that huge opening at the back of the dunker...that's not an exit, try and use that and you get to do it again.

The one in pesacola used to have a big screen at the end. You couldn't use that end as an exit if you wanted to.

Seat 7 (and 8) is cake eyes open or blindfolded. The window's right there. Its seats 3 and 4 that are the killers. Especially if you're blindfolded in Seat 3 and the Marine in Seat 7 kicks the window closed on his way out.

In the old dunker, Seat 7 was a painful one because you had to go over to the main exit side and then work over to the door. Even worse if you took the low roll. The thing I don't like about the new one is it's bigger, so when I had to go to the back exit window from the front left seat, it took a bit longer and the window wasn't as easy to find as on the old one. Took me a couple of sweeps to find the handle. I was missing my HABD bottle. Definitely doable, just one more thing to experience.

I don't remember a screen on the back door. That was where the divers yanked people out if they got in trouble.
I was in seat 2 blindfolded. It was easy even with people coming from the back through the cockpit and out the front window (not an approved exit from those seats). All in all I thought the dunker was fun. Whoever said it's more hype than anything else was dead on.

Exactly. Friggin newbies! Just goes to show how easy the navy is making it for all these youngins. Hell, they even did away with the Dilbert dunker (which is far more fun than the helo dunker, IMHO). Nothing like watching Officer and a Gentlemen to raise your "confidence" before doing the Dilbert.

Yup. Especially when you get to do the Dilbert dunker 4 times because you "bumped your head on the wing." Who cares? I'm wearing a damn helmet.

Damn, if I would've known that, I would've 'bumped' my head to.

I always enjoyed the size 13 boot in the face from your "buddy" as you try to get out blindfolded...

The helo dunker was the only thing in avphys I absolutely hated.
