Help Determining OCS App Strength

I am currently an OS1, which is very close but not in the IDC community, my degree is in Business Management with a 3.73GPA. This is my second time applying. The first time I did not have my degree in hand before I submitted but had it prior to the board convening, which is required if you are on active duty. I have an LOR from a CDR, and my interviews are with 2 LT's and a CDR. I am only 27 so I don't have to worry about any of the age requirements yet. Thank you for the information!

If you are only 27 then if this board is a no then go for something like SWO, your GPA is good, but degree and rate are off the target from what they look at, Intel might have been a good option but per RUFIO NRC has put out it is closed.

I really hope thats not the case but the board starts on monday so I will just have to wait and see. Do you by any chance know the normal turn around for the IDC board? I came off recruiting about a year ago from NRD Jacksonville but I am not sure the turn around. SWO has been quick but I know supply takes like a month to get the results, what about for IDC? Thank you for the help, hopefully I still get picked up

IDC can take up to several weeks to release results.

How well do recommendation letter and appraisal letters work for strength of a NFO packet. My prior C.O who is a Captain wrote me up an outstanding recommendation letter for NFO. He's a pilot currently working as a Deputy of NAVAIR in Pax River.

If you don't have good ASTB scores they won't care who you have a LOR or appraisal letters from and if you have really good ASTB scores they will barely look at the LOR or appraisal

So I can possibly have a top score on the ASTB with a some what low ranking recommendation letter and still get picked up? Meaning if an Officer writes that the person at hand really isn't naval officer material. They will barley pay attention to that?

That would be a red flag and your appraisal scores would be low so they would stick out, if you had a recommendation letter like that I have a feeling the CO would probably see that and might have reservations about sending in your application.

I am currently building up my kit, with just ASTB, personal statement, pending LORs, medical examinations, age-waiver, and my degree left to complete. I will be completely done with my degree in Oct16, but probably won't receive the degree until Nov16. I will be age critical for SNA with 30Apr17 being my 29th b-day. So I figure I will need to class up by Jan17 to commission prior to 30Apr. I have read in a few threads of people being selected months prior to graduation. My concern is as mentioned previously, is what are my chances of being classed up after graduation and being commissioned prior to 30Apr? Thanks in advance and for your time.

Since you are AD you cannot submit your application until your degree is conferred and says such on your transcripts.

Got beat to the punch. Biggest thing now and getting through to the ASTB exam, focusing on school and when the time comes knock everything else out. Still in the early stages here.

The boards are rolling for SNA/SNFO/SWO so there are no dates assigned to boards.

You're assuming a board will be meeting in December 2016. The boards are rolling which means they're not predeterined. You're putting your eggs already in one basket assuming you can submit a kit in November 2016, a board rolling the next month, and an OCS class another month after.

That makes sense, and appreciate the response. I am just hoping because of the crunch time I will be in. With after graduation leaving me 5 months to be commissioned in order to remain eligible for SNA. I will remain active, and hopeful for when I round that corner after submission. You have listed 3 jobs that are closed so with no boards your current chance is none.

You are above the minimum for applying so you cannot be denied the right to apply IF and when there is a board, your college might come into play IF you were neck and neck, however we have people that have 3.5 GPA's in tech fields with leadership and work experience getting turned down left and right.

If you were trying for Aviation and blew away the ASTB you might have a chance, FYI, I have had several people take the ASTB after saying they "aced" the AFQT and they scored average in all areas of the ASTB, I am not sure why or just dumb luck, but that is what I have seen.

LOR's will not overcome a bad GPA, I have seen LOR's from a President of a major university, Admirals, Generals, etc.... bad GPA is a bad GPA.

These may be true but this is not always the case. Im due in Quantico June 1st with an aviation contract and I graduated with a 2.4 in accounting so not all is lost. My PFT was only like 280s as well. However, my recommendations saved me. Former naval officer professor on campus vouched for me who also helped get my dad commissioned as an officer. Im fairly certain the ROTC commander on campus put in a good word for me as well as I was pretty friendly with the ROTC guys on campus (they were jealous of my 365 1RM bench ).
My Grandfather was a 4 star which I think sold me to the selection board. My university(Villanova) is also very well respected in the Navy and I think that gave my app some sway.

So dont let your undergrad GPA get you down. Your OSO realized that undergrad GPA does not define you as a person.
