I know many people ask this question but...what are my chances...

Hey everyone!

I've read this type of question many times on here before but a lot of you have given great advice when people asked so I thought I'd try. :) I am in the process of applying for an OCS and SNA slot and I just got back my ASTB scores...not real happy with them. I am NOT a good test taker and got a 5/6/5 and a 49, despite the amount of studying over the past several months. However, I have LOR's from a two star Admiral, the Congressman I work for, and a Navy Commander, who is in aviation. I also have my pilot's license and a lot of extra-curricular activities. My GPA is a 3.3 from Temple University and I got a double minor.

I guess I'm just hoping that with several other things in my package it will help even out those scores...what do you think? I know a lot of you have already gone through this process so just wanted to see if anyone else had something similar or had some good info.

Thanks!

What exactly are you asking? Your chances of getting into OCS, SNA, or *gulp* jets?

If it's OCS or SNA, just flippin' apply. None of us have a magic 8-ball that can tell you what the selection board will decide on any given week. Apply. You either get accepted or you don't.

If it's jets, here's the magic formula that will determine your "chances": Your performance in Primary plus the needs of the Navy the week that you are assigned = what you will fly.

That's it.

Just asking about OCS/SNA...I know how it goes regarding what aircraft you fly. And, as I stated, I am going to apply...because I want to be a Naval Officer more than anything...just trying to get some friendly advice from anyone regarding what they thought the chances currently are getting a slot in OCS and/or SNA with a package like that. Thanks!

Scores are low, maybe fatal. There is more to know (age, age is a biggie) but the rest you report is good. Just apply and then retake the test and reapply if necessary. Don't waste any time.

Thanks Wink! I am currently 23 (turning 24 in March)...yeah, I am not happy with those scores but I guess I'll see and then re-apply if need be..thanks!

Thanks Joey!

I may have to retake the ASTB but it will be well worth it to become a Naval Aviator. Just have to be able to better my test taking skills if I need to re-take...just nervous that I could actually do worse if I took it again now...maybe I'm just "over-thinking"

def reapply. and if you get turned down, apply again... and heck, apply for NFO while you're at it.

BEST ADVICE EVER...

I'm an NFO, wanted to be pilot originally SWO selectee... (pm and i'll tell)

The worst they can do is keep tellin you no, or they'll give you something else. I have a buddy who got selescted to go to OCS on his 4th try...

You'd actually be suprised how easy getting selected can be. I just got picked up on my 2nd try, and it would've been the first except my college transcripts didn't include my GPA for some weird reason. Anyways, you have LOR's, which I didn't have, My degree was from Excelsior College,...which is no Temple,....I have no minor, and no major. The only place I got you was the ASTB,...I ended up with a 57. My GPA was only 3.25 I think you have a better chance than most as long as your personal statements are well written. GOOD LUCK !!

Thanks Steve! Yeah, I called and talked to my recruiter yesterday after posting this and he said that even though the scores are not high, they are still qualifying and that with the rest of the stuff, it should help a lot in balancing everything out. I am going to submit everything the middle of next month so I guess we'll see... thanks guys!

Hey guys, I'm gonna be applying for BDCP SNA this coming summer. I transferred from a community college to Texas A&M and did poorly on my grades this semester. I was just wondering if one bad semester will kill my application or if they will understand that the transition is a difficult one to a major university? Also, are my grades from the community college going to be in my application or do I leave those out? Thanks
