I need help quick

I am in the process of getting weeded out by anthro because my bkl measurement is .51 too short in every pipline. The LCDR in the anthro dept is dead set to remove me from the program. I am desperate at this point. I am going to make a few calls to people who I believe can help me out, but if anyone can give me advice on what I should do next I would greatly appreciate it.

So far in my time down in Pensacola, I have loved every minute of it until this bomb dropped on me. I really want to stay a naval aviator instead of becoming a SWO. Please, help me.

Hey-
I got this from CJH23, on one of his responses. Thank him.

From the NOMI website:

ANTHROS
Required for applicants. No Waivers.

Sitting Height (SH) 32-41 in.

Functional Reach (FR) 28 in. or more

Buttock Knee Length (BKL) 21.9-28 in.

Buttock Leg Length (BLL) 36-50 in.

BKL is the most critical measurement. If member does not meet anthro standards on initial measurement he must be retested three times by the AVT and the flight surgeon. Please pay attention--these are frequently missed by examiners!

HEIGHT
Navy: 62" to 78" (M); 58" to 78" (F) for Commissioning in URL.
USMC: Minimum 66" (M) and 58" (F) for Commissioning

http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/Nami/WaiverGuideTopics/exams.htm#sna

Make sure you check your measurements before you apply. I was halfway through the application process when my recruiter said I needed to get measured - turned out I was an inch too short on the BKL.

Not to harsh you, but I guarantee you Doc Yeager is not "dead set to remove you from the program". Anthros aren't waiverable, by her or anybody. Neither is it a weeding-out program; it's to make sure you're safe to operate the aircraft. I'm not sure what kind of help you think you can get, from us or the "people you know".

By all means keep plugging away until you've exhausted every avenue, and I wouldn't give two cents for a student who wasn't willing to fight his way into the cockpit (Christ knows I see enough students who piss it away because it's too much work for them). But you wouldn't be the first person to get the NAMI whammy. It's not a conspiracy against you, and if Navy Air isn't in the cards, then it just ain't. I do agree 110,000% you don't want to be a Shoe, and usually the command will try to help out people who attrite through no fault of their own.

Thank you to both of you for your responses. I understand the aviation door is closing on me. I just wanted to make sure I checked every possible way to make sure I am disqualified. I guess my biggest beef I have with the whole thing is that I am taller than some people I see checking in with me everyday and I've met pilots who are shorter than me. I can't believe that I am missing the cutoff by so close.

I do have a couple questions for you Uncle Fester. It seems that you know the current anthro dept so I was wondering if it is at all possible for me to be on a 30 day remedial program to allow me to increase my BKL (increase my butt size) and then get remeasured. I have been measured twice already and according to ODSCandidate's response I can be measured 3 times? Also is it possible for me to go to NOMI and get remeasured there?

Thank you for your time

Haha, maybe not unhealthy, but I am getting desperate. My thought was I could workout everyday and especially focus on working out my butt. And if it is in the stars by the time they remeasure me I might be able to be within standards. Otherwise SWO here I come...

You realize that there are other healthier alternatives to SWO that don't involve sitting in a cockpit, right?

I knew a girl last year who got permission to do just that. She spent about an hour a day on squats at the gym to put more junk in the trunk. Not sure how that ended up for her.

Yo, so..I work in anthro with the LCDR you are referring to and her civilian assistant. They are both good professionals at what they do.

You are not as anonymous as you think you are AND I will have you know both of them do come on Airwarriors and read from time to time. You aren't doing yourself any favors by saying she's out to get you. They have no pride in telling someone they can't fit in the cockpit.

It is a safety issue that has to be considered above your desire to want to be a pilot.

I can't say I don't blame you for the disappointment but you have to take it like a man and not blame others. Like NAMI, anthro is just something you cannot help. I ended up to be a towering 5'7 physical specimen. Whatever.

They also don't HAVE to give you a remeasurement if you are that far off, they do it to try and help you out. When you are as far off as you are, it's usually just tough luck. So try being a little more greatful. You could be unemployed like many other people out there.

Not I know that this is not the perfect analogy and I do realize you are short by just enough that a well timed fart could make the difference ... but ...

I remember back in high school I worked for an amusement park in kiddie land. The kids had to be a certain height to ride the roller coaster ... and these mothers (and fathers) would do all sorts of things to get their kids on these rides. Toilet paper in the shoes, pony tails on top of their heads, really tall sneakers, heals!, making small talk while their husbands tried to sneak by, ... and all sorts of 'good' ideas.

I always wanted to smack some sense into these parents and say ... "this is your kid! You do know that we don't have height restrictions just to make you have a sucky day, right?"

I'm stashed in Anthro, and I know she would not be set on kicking you out of the program. Anthro is likely to re-measure you several times on different occasions as a courtesy. Sometimes it helps and other times it does not. It would be unfortunate if this did not go your way (and I really hope it does!) I'm just wondering how the Naval Academy did not catch this as a possible issue while you were there...

Right on, man! I completely agree.

Careful JAC....you might get the rumor mill started again...and Lord knows there is nothing more psychologically debilitating to A-pool Ensigns than 'knowing' that Big Navy has to 'whittle down the numbers' one way or another.

Just a thought. :D

(Unless, of course, you really are serious, in which case God help the A-pool...)
