Go, listen, and learn. It's the best course I've taken in the military and don't worry you'll pick up the slack the squids leave.
I hiked my LCPL "buddy" into the ground while on the mountain - to include repeated "sir, we've gotta stop" and "can we switch packs?" pleadings. I didn't really think there was much of a difference between packs, but whatever.

I can't help but imagine this kid, struggling under the weight of his AND your packs, trudging after you as you strike a magestic "follow me" pose with an up-side-down map in your hand.:D :icon_wink

^ Haha!

I got a lot of "good" SERE stories out of one of my professors... the same professor who took an F-8 Crusader to 80,000 ft to chill his beer. Dumb shit about how he supposedly beat up one of the SERE instructors.

More likely that he was just trying to impress college freshmen with fantastic stories of when he was a "fighter pilot".

If you are aircrew bring a flight suit/cammies (I mention this because the packet my unit was handing out was wrong re: uniforms of the day and the allowed/recommended items- they will give you a new info packet there).

The other thing I will say is if you have gotten any gouge from people who went to any place besides SD, forget it.

This is true... gouge for Warner Springs and gouge for Brunswick are NOT compatible.

I went to Brunswick, and found that their web site's advice on what to bring was spot on; can't vouch for Warner, but here is their link: http://www.faso.navy.mil/wartimesere.htm

Three quick comments:

1) Trying to get gouged up before going actually hurts rather than helps you

2) The best thing you can do for yourself is have a well broken in pair of boots. Best money I ever spent was getting a pair of Danner Ft. Lewis boots 2 months prior and breaking them in well.

3) There are two philosophical approaches to SERE school. The first is "This will be over in (insert amount of time), and I'll be done". Suck it up, get the stamp in your NATOPS jacket, and you're on your way. Not the best way, but it works for plenty of people. The better way is to embrace the process, and use the class to learn and internalize what they are teaching. Yeah, it sucks, but a positive mental attitude and an understanding that the "suckiness" is a key component of the whole process is key. Wallow in self-pity and it will seem like it takes forever; get involved in the process, leverage the knowledge the instructors have, learn, and it seems to go much quicker.

Yeah, but if you are going to get the gouge, shut the hell up when you're there. The more you talk about what you know, the more the instructors will hear it and then change the experience, usually not for the better.

Isn't there rules about trying to G2 the course? I hope not for your sake because if there is any Instructors reading you just got a big star next to your name? Good luck.
