I fail to see how METOC is in any way an "information" or "intelligence" related community.

My office mate up here in Newport is a METOC Officer. They way he explained it was that since 'weather' is part of the JIPOE, METOC falls under Intel.
The Navy looked to consolidate all the N-2/J-2 functions with N-6/J-6 functions to since it's sometimes tough to separate where the intel ends and IO begins. Plus it gives you an opportunity to make an admiral more powerful....

My biggest gripe with the pin is a few years ago Rescue Swimmers (Aircrew and Surface) wanted a device to separate themselves from other sailors due to the inherent risk of jumping into the water to save other personnel.
The Navy denied the request with the stated reason being there were too many insignia devices at that time.

If you are qualified to drive a small boat you get a special pin. If you can look outside and tell it's raining you get a special pin. Risk your life to save someone else; sorry dude, you're out of schlitz!!!

Only in the Navy can we consider the consolidation of six different skill sets a specialty. In every other warfare community there are core skills you have to master to be awarded the pin. What's the core skill among these? PowerPoint is the only thing I see.

Naval aviation is the only warfare that you get your pin before you have any 'fleet quals'. SWO, Sub and SEALs all have to get to thier first fleet tour and then go through a qual process. I'm thinking that these folks are all gonna have to go through some qual process in the fleet before they get their pins.

There aren't too many Admirals who are Rescue Swimmers.......

Of course Naval Avaition was the first with a 'warfare pin' and continues to follow the tradition set in the beginning, the others are just copycats.

My point is the overlap between these disciplines is sketchy to call them a warfare "community" While Aviators/NFO's get their wings before they've gotten any mission specific quals, the items that are common among all aircraft are established before we get those devices.

I will be very surprised if upon the award of these pins if the average newly pinned info warrior has as much metro background as a newly winged aviator/NFO does (as an example)

I'm not sure about the pin itself, but we do have about a year long qualifying journey before we are considered full IWOs. We are 1640s while we qual then become 1610s. Hmm...I wonder if reaching level 80 in World of Warcraft is required before we can pin that sweet diddy on.

I too am confused on how much METOC overlaps with the others. However, I do see alot of overlap on several other specialties. The Information DOMINANCE (Always to be seen in bold and caps) Community will hopefully have this all sorted listed out soon enough.

Now I would hate to see this Information DOMINANCE warfare device prevent my sailors DIRSUP to a ship or sub achieving other quals. Or give them an excuse just to hide in the SCIF and not work with the rest of the crew.

There is very little in common between an HSC H-60S doing VERTREP and an F-18 going downtown, but it's all considered Aviation because they all fly.

VADM Dorsett looked at who 'brokers' information within the Navy and that's who he pulled into the Info Dominance communiy. Since all of these areas are distributors of info they got rolled up into one big community

Since each of these designators is a relatively small cadre, as compared to say 13XX, this allows the Navy to spread the Intel experise around the fleet in a more efficient manner since you'll have 1 community in charge of all the Intel/Info related fields. I know the Detailers send people there, but someone needs to dictate to NPC who get what and which commands are the priority for this community.

Plus as an added bene, it allowed a 2 star to become a 3 star and Admirals are ALWAYS in favor of that!!
