According to SECNAVINST 1650.1G, they're eligible:

(d) Personnel aboard a ship are eligible when
the safety of the ship and the crew were endangered by enemy
attack, such as a ship hit by a mine or a ship engaged by shore,
surface, air or sub-surface elements.

I still think it's gay. As for mine, I shouldn't be eligible:

(2) The principal eligibility criterion is that the
individual must have participated in a bona fide ground or
surface combat fire-fight or action during which he/she was
under enemy fire and his/her performance while under fire was
satisfactory. Service in a combat area does not automatically
entitle a service member to the CAR.

Seeing as how I was under enemy fire, but slept through it - I would hardly call my performance satisfactory. I tried to tell everyone that wanted to listen, but it didn't matter...

We were rocketed a couple of times at Al Asad, and I slept through both; I figured my CAR would come with the Bronze Hammock Device for Satisfactory Performance... For better or for worse, our Front Office didn't even *consider* putting in for a CAR for the unit, even though other Prowler squadrons have done that and received the award. Had we gotten one, I would have worn it - but secretly hung my head in shame...

As for the opinion Sub, Surf, and Air guys have of the community... they're basically bus drivers. Their purpose in life is to get us to the area where we do our missions, and pull the trigger if the mission requires. Would you rather be driving the bus, briefing the drivers or actually doing the mission?

There is a very good reason we don't have to do all the day to day BS, and fly out to meet those guys for mission requirements.

You may want to check that attitude the next time log in here, especially when you disparage the profession of that is the purpose of the forum here. Last time I checked your mission was to support those submariners, SWOs, aviators and ground pounders doing their job, rarely the other way around and even then you ain't the end to the means.

As always…it depends. Most do one at least one sea tour…depending upon if you screen for additional duties later…you could do 2-3 additional tours.

Absolute Best case: JO tour (IW DIVO tour); LCDR tour (CRC billet); CDR tour (Fleet Cryptologist); CAPT tour (DIWC). A Direct Support tour could also be sprinkled in…but that would be a lot of sea time, as opposed to meeting other community requirements ashore.

You could also end up doing multiple operational tours where you don't belong to the sea-going unit but instead join them when they are at sea. In the course of a single tour you could end up being on a number of different ships.

There are actually more IW officers than sea-going billets available…and the billets at the O-4 and above level are screened billets…i.e. you have to qualify/be selected for them.
