I don't believe that Trent Lott was making a racist statement anymore than I believe that John Kerry was deliberately trying to bash the military rank and file. They are both political creatures and regardless of their true feelings on any particular issue they would not intentionally try to alienate a large portion of the electorate. However taking both of their comments at face value I think that Lott's faux paux is a little more extreme.

I feel very strongly about what Kerry said. I was at the Military Entrance Processing Station yesterday, and the guys around me were up in arms about his remarks. I take what Kerry said very personally. I will go to Parris Island this summer, as a 92 day reservist, and do not want to be thrown into the stereo type of being uneducated. I will go to college after basic. Kerry directly insulted those overseas and created the stereo type that all basic soldiers are dumb and uneducated. Some say Kerry's political career is over, and I for one am embarrassed he is representing our country.
 
What Senator Kerry really proves with his initial comment and his handling of the backlash is this:

Just because you are "educated" doesn't mean you are "intelligent"...
I would submit that the opposite is also true; Just because you aren't "educated" doesn't mean that you aren't "intelligent".
 
Just goes to show how theatrical politics have become (or always have been). all this hoopla over a fudged statement that really has nothing to do with who stands where on the issues of the day.

Two issues I have with this:
  1. There NEVER has been a requirement of military service to be elected President, or for that matter for someone to speak to what they think is best for the military...
  2. President Bush served in the Air National Guard...while there may be some dispute as to the fullness of his service, his commanding officers at the time considered the matter closed. Vice President Cheney had 4 student exemptions for the draft during Vietnam (as my own father did) and one for the legal "hardship" qualifications of the day.

I don't think we want to get into a discussion over who was in school to learn and who was just there to avoid the draft. There were MANY who were exempt from the draft based on specific guidelines of the time, whether it be school, married, or other dependant based hardship clauses.

Elected civilan leaders have been making statements about what the military needs or is best for the military as long as there has been a military, this administration is no different.

Well back on topic...

I really could care less about Kerry's remark, though I do find it amusing that all of this backlash for something that he should have seen coming long before hand...some poor speach writer should get fired for that one...

If thats all he was waiting for, well d'mn...good on him, but personally it took 9 months of trying before the wife got pregnant...kinda a hard thing to game...but hey thats just my .02

You didn't get pregnant, your wife did. Do you menstruate with your wife too? How about the menopause - is that in your future as well?
