July Non-selects

My OR said that even if I improved my package, NFO is out of the picture. The reason being I have to wait 6 months to reapply, and won't make the cut because of my B-day in June. I feel comfortable with my OAR for a shot at SWO later down the road. I plan on improving my motivational statement. Funny thing is my OR thought my statement was great.

I was NS for NFO and SWO. I turn 27 next June, so I heard I can't reapply NFO because the next board is in December which is less than 6 months away.

Right now I'm up for Intel, which should meet next week.

I'll reapply SWO, if I'm NS for Intel too.

It's frustrating that people with lower ASTB's and GPA's got selected over me for both NFO and SWO. Hope that's not the case for Intel.

Sorry to hear that for you man. Not to make you feel any worse, but my OR told me a couple of months ago that intel was extremely competitive, so I hope you get it but brace yourself. Don't despair though, you're not as old as me, I just turned 28 and was pro rec-Y for SWO.

How is your motivational statement? LOR's? Stay positive and think of ways you can make yourself look more appealing the next time around. The selection rate could be much higher the next time, who knows? Don't give up!

Didn't read this before I posted.

The board that accepted a buddy of mine took 30 of 900. Not sure how long ago that was, as it takes friggin' forever to get from your pro-rec to actually going to OCS for intel.

Interesting, I always thought that it was some leftover from back when API was in AOCS, and intel went to AOCS instead of old-school OCS.

It could have been back then, then they changed and then there was a typo, who knows, we also had CEC guys taking the OAR and it wasn't required.

TA910,

The day I found out I was a non-select for SNA/SNFO I went out and bought some algebra refresher books and the ASTB book. I plan on re-taking the test sometime at the beginning of September, and getting 1 or 2 more LOR's. Now that we've been through the process, (albeit with negative results) with some persistence and good study habits we'll see each-other at OCS soon enough!

I am with you on that one. We are going for the same dream, we are bound to see each other in OCS. My plans are simular. It took me a couple days just to let things sink in. "Wow, I have to start all over again." But failure is not an option. Lost the first round, now time for round two. I studied every other day for an hour the first time. Now I study everyday even after getting off a 12 hour work day. More motivated than ever

Definitely keep on pushing, I applied for STA-21 2 times and Flying CWO as well, never got a spot, then ended up DQ'd for flight duty. I then went on to finish bachelors on my own, funding a couple courses out of pocket due to duty under instruction status restrictions. I pushed to improve everything over all and now from what I understand, I was only 1 of 4 SWO fleet applicants that got picked up.

Just keep doing everything you can to improve your package and your odds will increase in tandem. Constantly try to think and look for that way to better yourself and give you an edge over the competition.

For you fleet guys, one thing that may help is to get your Coast Guard Captains License. You should have the knowledge and hours at sea. Pay the few bucks and make it official ;) I did a few odd items like this which probably helped out quite a bit in my opinion. I am sure the wicked beard I had in the picture helped as well :)

Congrats on your success! Def. will continue to better my package. I have met other Navy, Air force, and Marine vets along the way thus far. All of which have the same message, "Keep pushing let nothing stop you. At the end of your career you will see how rewarding the hard work paid off."

Success is not measured by how many times you failed. Its measured by the lessons you've learned, the obstacles you've overcome, and for the times you continued to knock on the door that was slammed in your face; before you finally recieved the chance to walk through

Lol...I sympathize. My ASTB and GPA were better than several that were selected for pilot and NFO. I had prior service as an avionics tech, I flew with my squadron to operate systems during missions, and right now I operate radar systems and work with engineers to help pilots and nfo's learn how to defeat them....systems operation is my career and im pretty good at it...and non select for NFO lol...whole person concept I suppose :p my profile picture isn't fake its me flying in support of OEF...the last time I'll wear a flight suit...but the Navy felt I'm more adept at supply functions...lol...I'm fine with if in the long run, just saying don't get discouraged, many of us thought we had a good chance and it didn't happen...
