Yea, the rest of the surface navy (including the air dets) get stuck with a mess bill that is far more expensive than the food is worth. Just the nature of the beast.Boom Boom said:Does any service except Carrier Aviation pay for their meals..
Yea, the nukes do their first tour on a small boy doing a topside job (non engineering). It used to be that nukes' first tour was 18 months (straight stick SWO's--me for example--do a first tour of 24 months) and then they head off to nuke power school and prototype. Once they finish that, they head off to their second divo tour on a CVN. This tour for them is 24 months I believe. When I was on the LINCOLN a few years back, we had several nukes that were commissioned through OCS who did one single longer tour of 3 years. So for these folks, they did have to learn to drive. Though the ones I saw go through the process qual'd, but didn't stand the watch.gatordev said:No, just part of their career path. I'm sure Steve can add the details, but basically they do their time on both CVNs as well as smaller decks to keep themselves competitive for command. And since they're not going to drive a CV, that pretty much leaves the small boys. One was a DH, and the other was on a first or second JO deployment (SWOs generally have two 18 month tours before their shore tour). And Nuke cruisers? I'm not quite that old.![]()
