Looking for a female perspective on OCS

Thank you for your response! My lobe piercings are pretty new so I’m concerned they’ll close if I don’t wear retainers over night. Do you know if any women had issues with their piercings closing?
We didn’t get new piercings before leaving. Be prepared to have them close.

They will likely close. In candio phase (the final 3 weeks of OCS), you are authorized to wear small gold ball earings in certain uniforms but there's a lot of rules and red tape that it isn't worth it.
Just get them redone once you commission

Hello! Question for recent grads since I’m aware some changes have happened recently. As of fall 2024, is hair longer than collar length still required to be in a bun until candio? I can get my hair in a squared away braided ballet bun just fine, just looking to see if I need to polish up a second method for speed.

This is the Navy hair regulation. All hair longer than the lower edge of the back collar will have to be put into a bun or cut to be maintained shorter than the collar. A braided bun will be acceptable wear. If you’re unsure about your length, you can ask your class team what they’d advise and they’ll probably tell you to either cut it or bun it. Staff will remind you when it’s getting too long. This regulation will be followed all throughout training, being a candio will not change that, unless class team for whatever reason says something different.

(3) Hair length, when in uniform, may touch, but not fall below a horizontal line level with the lower edge of the back of the collar. With jumper uniforms, hair may extend a maximum of 1-1/2 inches below the top of the jumper collar. Long hair, including braids, will be neatly fastened, pinned, or secured to the head. When bangs are worn, they will not extend below the eyebrows. Hair length will be sufficient to prevent the scalp from being readily visible (with the exception of documented medical conditions).

Thanks for the quick response! My understanding (from this reg) was that fleet rules now permit more options (e.g. tidy, length-restricted ponytail) than just a bun for longer hair, and that while fleet rules apply during candio, the first three phases are more restrictive.

Graduated a couple of years ago from OCS, but by the time I hit candio, basic make up and earrings were back on table.
Most of us didn't bother bc its just a couple of weeks and didn't want to risk pissing off some random staff member bc we didn't know the regs...

I remember some girl in my class getting blasted for wearing earrings in the wrong uniform.

Same goes for hair. Unless you really understand the regulations, its just easier to do what you've already been doing tbh.

Graduate and go onto the fleet or flight school where regs largely relax on this type of stuff.

That’s fair, that’s my bad on the misunderstanding. So ponytails are only allowed during candio phase and while wearing PT gear, there is no length restriction during that time. All other times your hair must either be in a bun (like in NWU or NSU) or at a length allowed in uniform (shorter than bottom edge of collar).

You are allowed earrings and conservative use of makeup during candio phase (you’ll be given a class).
