Same-o, same-o ... I also got a C&R for that reason, amongst others. The principal reason for me was to eliminate SOME of the bureaucratic C/S that "most" 2nd Amendment believers must go through ....

And I could take advantage of some really collectible items before eBay got P.C.

Anyone shoot a Browning Hi Power any more?
Used to ... it's a good handgun.

I had one (not collectible) that I had checkered, hard-chromed, and sent back to Novak for Trijicon lo-mount sights. This was about 10 years ago when Novak was a hot item and he had just done the Hi-Powers for the FBI's HRT.

I was going to collect a representative model of all the Hi-Powers (European with a couple US); then I decided not to --- I was going to keep one (described above) for myself --- then sold it --- and have none today.

I decided to stick with the stuff that was REALLY collectible from a $$$ standpoint. Mostly USGI, 1903 to 1945.

By the way ... Merry Christmas, guys.

Sorry to jack the thread here for a second, but how do most people here feel about the SIG P226? I am trying to make up my mind between that, the H&K USP or P2000, or a cheaper Taurus 911 (their 1911-styled 9MM). I want a 9MM for cheaper ammo and for familiarizing myself with shooting...new gun nut here. :D

Bang! Bang!

There is a lot out there:
If "familiarizing myself with shooting" is the near term goal, I would seriously consider a .22. A Ruger is what we used for the basics on the Navy Reserve Rifle/Pistol team. .22 ammunition and pistols are relatively cheap. It's something to get you going without a large investment and then you can move up as you become more knowledgeable.

GLOCK 19 is quite satisfactory plus you can get one inexpensively if you stumble across PD trade-ins ..... I have one and like it. I "upgraded" the mag release, slide lock, and put Trijicons on it. The out of the box slide lock and mag release need to be redesigned, IMHO. ALWAYS get "drop-free" magazines with a GLOCK. By the way, they are "MAGAZINES", not "CLIPS". There is a difference ...

You might also consider Springfield Armory's "new" XD line (originally marketed as "HD"). They are very satisfactory and are basically a GLOCK "prettied up" with lipstick and eyeliner. Works fine, lasts a long time.

You can NEVER go wrong with a SiG, any model. It is all about whether or not it "fits" your wallet and your end purpose.

I liked H&K's until the USP ... using an H&K P7M8 I won a couple of police competitions. Very fast and accurate, with the low-mounted barrel, but quite pricey today... and the "squeeze-cocker" (can I say that?) took a little practice getting used to ....

I would stay away from any and all "compensated" pistols unless you are building a "race gun" for competition or something similar. I know, I used to have a couple; both "done right". An interesting experiment, but stay away from it as if your life depended on it. Eschew all whistles and bells in a handgun purchased for personal protection. The reason is obvious .... stick to the basics unless you have a LOT of time to practice and work out any hardware "glitches". A handgun is a tool, and you need to be proficient and knowledgeable with your tools to get maximum efficiency -- safely -- out of them.

My all time favorite is still the Colt 1911 and clones. I like big, slow bullets. They make big holes, slowly. I carried one when we could pick our own sidearms (used the issue .38 for flare rounds ONLY) but I suppose that option is gone today unless you are in Spec Ops... ?

I've got a glock 22 with a .22LR conversion kit. It is a nice gun and all, but .40 is spendy. The conversion kit was spendy too (about $250) but well worth it. Glocks are good all around guns. They aren't the most accurate in the world (they are, however, pretty damn good) but they are nigh indestructible. I have NEVER had a missfire and i've put at least 2K rounds through it. It doesn't really require cleaning either. You could bury one on the beach, come back three months later and it'd work (it has been tested under similar conditions). Great guns. The .22LR kit is nice becuase of how much cheaper the ammo is, also quite accurate.

I've always wanted a Kimber 1911. For the price of a Kimber you can get all the functionality of a tricked out Colt 1911 without paying the Colt price. Only 7 round mags (8 with an extender) though, one factor people don't like. Of course, if you can't hit your target with the first 7 rounds, i'm not sure another 7-8 will do you any good. Then again, nobody lost a gun fight because they had too many bullets!

While we're all on guns... I just got back from the range. Had a great time. Got to shoot the new Springfield M1A, Mossberg .22 rifle, Mossberg 590, Springfield XD-40 and Walter P-22. Lots of ammo down the drain, but it was fun.

Thanks for the info, guys, I really appreciate it. Since I will have to make due with one (and only one) firearm for a while, it has to be something that is good for "familiarizing" and for carrying for personal protection.

The more I look into it, the more I am leaning toward the SIG P226. It seems to have the best combination of price and quality.

As I said, I love the 1911-style pistols, particuarly those from Kimber and Springfield Armory, but I don't want to start out with a .45, due to the cost of ammo and the fact of having to reload twice as often while practicing.

So, probably gonna go with the SIG. I now return you to your regularly-scheduled thread.

</end threadjack>

As said before, I own a P226. You can not go wrong with this pistol. It's pricey, but it's uber-reliable and it's a sweet shooter. Very very accurate out of box, in fact, it's been said to be the most accurate pistol out-of-box (i.e. straight from the factory, no modifications).

Went to some shops today, and wow.

No question about it, I'm getting the SIG P226. I tried the H&K P2000, USP, and P7M8, the Kimber 1911, Springfield Armory 1911, Glocks out the wazoo, and a few S&Ws.

My thoughts:

The H&Ks all felt "topheavy" to me. Like I automatically wanted to point them downward.

The Glocks felt like crap. Very boxy, not comfortable, felt cheaply made.

The 1911s just felt too "cold/stiff" (I know it's a gun, but bear with me) for my tastes.

Then the gentleman brought out the only P226 he had, a used one in the Nitron finish (I prefer the stainless steel for pure aesthetic reasons). Love at first sight/touch. Felt perfectly comfortable and ergonomic, perfectly balanced, the trigger action was immaculate and easy, though still substantial. I can't say enough about it. I have found my pistol, I think.
