Manuvering boards

The single biggest thing that made it click for me was the whole E -> M, E ->R, R -> M thing. RM can mean relative motion. Once I saw that, it made sense (and teaching it for a year helped)...until trying to figure out winds. Somehow it's easier when I just look at the gyro and look at the relatives.

Still learning how much I don't know.

This brought back too many memories of pain and suffering. If I never see another moboard it'll be too soon.

A moboard is a tool that shoes use to figure out how to put the wind just outside of the wind limits.

Why do moboards when you can just hunt for the wind?

(shamelessly stolen)

He bowls overhand.
I spent a whole semester in ROTC proving to myself that I should never be a SWO because of my complete inability to grasp the concept behind moboards.

Ironically, the SWOs in my OCS class had the toughest time understanding moboards.

i rocked moboards in OCS, but I totally agree with A4s. If you can do it, fine, whatever. The guy who's likely to be best at moboards on a ship is going to be a SWO, and, well, he can have it.

I'd rather be getting crew rest than doing moboards.

what's worse than trying to learn moboards, was trying to learn them from our ECMO ROTC advisor since the schedule didn't jive with the SWO advisor. It may explain some of the difficulties we had, since his attitude was very much the same as ours: "This sucks, I don't want to do them, and flying is cooler than being a SWO."

Out of the dozen kids in the class, about 9 went aviation, 2 sub bubs, and one swotivator. He got an A on the test. The rest of us got A's, too. Sweet sweet irony.

I wish I learned mo-board before OCS, but I still think I would have been str8 lost on my own. Good luck to me when I have to get my Supply SWO qual and stand OOD.

Is that for realz? I didn't know chops even qual'd OOD, let alone stood it...I guess it depends a lot on the ship(?)

CHOPS on subs qualify as DOOW (Diving Officer of the Watch); competent ones, that is.

I say this for 2 / 3 of the CHOPS I had qualified DOOW. The other one had two left feet.
