March 23 AMDO board

This whole not a recruiting but retention is starting to seem like an issues across the board. From what I've heard from AD SWOs is that they need people due to people not staying in. Which points to the retention issue at hand. I agree OCS is different, but I remember my time on USN AD and within Aviation, they picked the guys from AD with the experience more often then those without it. As well that's the issue, his OR looked at the TIS and rolled the dice. I'm not counting him out, but pushing his package up last minute off seems half done. It would be nice if he had a list of the boards package due dates so he'll know well in advance to cutoffs.
It can vary from designator to designator and also how things are going within that designator, for years IWC would heavily pick those who had AD experience in that field, then they realized those guys were retiring when they became eligible, that led to a flip and heavily picking civilian, now they have put in TIS limits.

Those that really don't care at all are SNA/SNFO/SWO/Supply/CEC they others are the ones that can vary but the new TIS requirements are going to lessen the swings.

Hey all! From reading this thread it seems like everyone applying for AMDO is former enlisted. Is it unlikely for someone with a technical degree and 62 oar to get selected for AMDO?

I don't see why not, your OAR seems good to me. As well you do hold a technical degree. With OCS if your going Line Officer, the kind of the degree degree doesn't matter. Just have a good GPA. Have good recommendation and you'll be good to do. I have a few friends who are now Navy Pilots and AMDOs on Active Duty who were Prior Enlisted who have degrees in Bull Crapping lol.

Since I am AD, I did look into some of the AD selectees from the past cycles and the majority had a degree in science. Other than that since results have not come out yet and I am awaiting, who knows.

I got a 47 on my OAR, but maintained a 3.87 GPA in Aeronautical Science.

That's very true, the hard part is trying to see what the selection board may be looking for. You would think those with Aviation back group would be selected first for AMDO since we have the background in Aircraft Maintenance . I was an AM when I was Active Duty and a AT in the Reserves. Degree in Business, Avionics Technology and some Aerospace Engineering Certs through Lockheed. As well a Navy/ Marine Commendation Medal for solving a complex Aircraft Maintenance issue. You'll think I'll be sure pick for the board but it comes down to who they really want. We'll see once the results are out.

For real it’s some crazy stuff, I was recently awarded a NAM for successfully passing CWTPI with my team, but every AT knows it’s just a dog and pony show.

For real, I completely understand if someone who has Five Comm and a Purple Heart gets selected, but not a person who is a BMSN with a 2.6 GPA lol.

I did see some pretty stout 3rd and 2nd classes with masters degrees and it makes me wonder. At that point if I was in only 2 years and already had a degree I’d get out and come back in as an O, but I don’t know if that process is harder.

Historically AMDO is one of those designators that prefers prior enlisted with good maintenance experience. It doesn't mean they haven't or won't pick someone that is not prior service, but odds historically are against it.

The OAR doesn't mean much at all if anything, the board members I met for various boards never bothered with it.

Aviation doesn't care about degree type, and to an extent not even GPA, the ASTB is what is important to them.

AMDO for enlisted is very lenient on degree type if they have good aviation maintenance experience. I had a candidate with a ME degree and an MBA with very high GPA's, declined twice, a few other OR's at my NRD had what I would consider AMDO candidates and none picked up, I always felt the AMDO board looked for the purple unicorn for a civilian applicant.

Oh , but did the candidate with the MBA have Aviation Experience?

Most come in with a degree completed these days. I attended college before I went Active Duty back in the day.

In 2021 1.3 million joined the military of those only 304000 had a Bachelors or higher, if you include an Associates that number goes up to about 419000.

It looks like if you break out the USN and USMC from a different source the percentage is 7% enter with college degree.
