Bravo Two-Zero was a GREAT book, but a pretty crappy movie. I watched about 5 minutes of it on Showtime. When I saw a small band of SAS using rifles to cover a retreat across a flat open desert at short range against a BMP, I really couldn't keep watching. Sorry.

Bat-21 was inspired by a true story, rather than based. They took some pretty big liberties with the recovery effort. Still entertaining, though. I liked Danny Glover as the Bird Dog pilot.

I can't comment on the Thin Red Line...I fell asleep. Yes, war can be 99% boredom and 1% terror, but you're supposed to make movies about the 1%.

Since I've given other's picks my critiques, you can bust on mine. Apocalypse Now--yes, it's a negative portrayal of the military, esp. the director's cut "Redux" version, but Robert Duvall absolutely rocks as Col Kilgore. The movie made me want to be a helo pilot.

Also, We Were Soldiers was excellent. Yes, it had plenty of helicopters going for it, but also had a lot of action and a real sense of the people involved.

I also have to second "The Great Santini." A great movie, and a better book. Check out Pat Conroy's (the author) eulogy to his father (the real Great Santini) at www.patconroy.com . It's pretty good stuff.

Greetings from vacation in Sydney! You just gotta love Australia...

Patton - there's nothing like George C. Scott marching out in front of the giant American flag and just cutting loose with that famous speech.

Kelly's Heroes was quite funny - especially Donald Sutherland pulling out his pistol ready to quickdraw against a Tiger Tank.

The Wind and the Lion - where the Marines land (in Dress Blues) and are double-timing to the sheik's palace with fixed bayonets - and you hear the American ambassador, "The French and the Germans aren't going to like this...."

The Siege of Firebase Gloria - where the Marine SgtMaj (R. Lee Ermy) frags the Army captain and takes command of the firebase.

Well just because Phrogdriver has ADD doesn't mean The Thin Red Line is boring just one of those war movies that has an emphasis on well thought out dialogue with plenty of explosions and killing in the background. As a side note on Major Paine I just saw an interview with 53 driver on Mail Call where the was a Major Payne.

Tolerance only benefits the weak

Well it's not a movie, but ever since i was a little kid i watch "Black Sheep Squadron" re-runs on T.V. Maj. Pappy Boyington and his marine pilots terrorizing the south pacific, stealing cases of scotch, hitting on the nurses, getting into brawls with the other service men, oh and occasionally wasting some Zeros with those gorgeous F-4U Corsairs. OK OK...they took a little license with the day to day lives of pilots in WW2....but still, every time i get to crawl into a cockpit, the opening bars of the theme music will be playing in my head.

phrogdriver brings up a good point on Thin Red Line. Boring as hell until the shooting starts...with long intervals in between.

For Nam movies dont forget Platoon and possibly Hamburger Hill.

Oh and IMO Apocalypse Now kinda falls in the Thin Red Line category, there are some pretty dull parts. You gotta watch for the "Ride of the Valkyries" Part though.

My personal fav is "The Great Escape." Every time, I keep hoping that Steve McQueen's bike will make it over the fence to Switzerland

"Black Sheep Squadron" = 70's version of "Pensacola: Wings of Gold." However, I do have low standards when it comes to choosing my TV programming so I watch both.

What, not "GI Jane?" Commie propaganda.

Well, as far as movies go, I thought it was pretty decent. Even if it was based on a completely ridiculous premise.

You tell them!

There's a movie I was watching on cable that I completely forgot about. "The Rock" with Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery. Features Force Recon Marines as villains!

Anyone seen Windtalkers? How good was that one?
Hot Shots...I never knew about the olive trick and how it could apply to a good documentary, or how you could use a chicken with your bow when you ran out of arrows...

"Jane" is Commie propaganda because it's unrealistic and looks as if someone did a point paper on women in ground combat. People say women would be a liability in POW situations, so the movie has a prison scene. They say women can't carry a man to safety, so the movie's finale is her carrying her male comrade. Etc, etc, etc...

There are no advantages to letting the other 50% in combat, unless fairness is an advantage. In war, you need to be as unfair as possible, especially to the enemy!

BTW, I did enjoy "The Rock," even the *USAF* F-18s from a VMFA squadron!
