Married During API?

If anyone has got any advice for some who would be married during API, please let me know (ie. Certian paper work that should be filled that might not be common knoledge, or just general advice.)

Any advice would be helpfull...
 
if it's DURING the 6 weeks during API... is there any way you can re-schedule? It might be a hassle to get the time off, but not impossible. Otherwise, should be no big deal to take the time off while in P-cola. Hope it helps?
 
You should not have any trouble getting leave to do it while you are in A-pool. Just let them know the date as soon as you check in. If you wait until you class up to drop a leave chit, don't expect for them to do you any special favors. When you class up for API, you are in the pipeline and have a date in the computer that you should start and finish primary by. They are not going to want to change your Primary date because of poor planning on your part.

I saw your other post about liberty during API. What are you doing right now? It seems that if you are waiting for OCS that you need to go to your recruiter and get these quesitons answered. If the date of your wedding is flexible, you might want to check into getting hitched before you go in for OCS. That way you can get all of the paperwork done at once and not have to fight the system later on. You also get a lot more $ for housing if you are married. That can come in handy when you are looking for a place to live after API.
 
There are five things you're supposed to do for your wife when you get married:

1. Submit a marriage packet to your command (No documentation is more important because with it she will be officially recognized and receive the benefits of a spouse by the Defense Enrollment Eligibility System (DEERS). These benefits will let her shop at the commissary, receive life insurance benefits, and obtain health care.)

2. Obtain a military ID card for your wife (Obtain from the personnel office... your wife needs this because she will have to show this ID at the commissaries, doctor's office, gym, etc)

3. Put a base decal on her car

4. Enter her into the Tricare system (The military's HMO)

5. Grant her a Power of Attorney (This is standard... it allows her to conduct business on your behalf in your absence, namely during deployments.)

I think he means just being married in general, as in having a wife in OCS/API etc... Not actual having a wedding. In this case, most of the paper work will be filed with the recruiter and at OCS and he should not run into any problems after he gets to OCS. I will also be married during these times and am also curious as to what the spousal protocol is. For instance, if the wait for API is 6 months, how do they handle moving her since it is not a PCS move or longer than 5 month school? What happened with everyone's wives? Especially those with professional careers other than teaching/nursing. All that moving is gonna screw her. How did you all deal with it. Thanks
 
my husband has been at ocs almost 6 weeks (granted two of them were during all the hurricane mess) and they still have not gotten to fill out the paper work to put him or me in deers. it is frustrating for me because i really need to get on tricare, but i can't really communicate with my husband to find out what's going on on his end, and there's nothing he can really do if the people down there don't take care of it.
 
I had the same question before I went to OCS also.

When you go to OCS, during week 10 or 11 or whatever, the PSD guy will have the married aviators get "follow on" orders to Whiting. This will allow married guys to move your wives down here to pensacola for API. Once you are all here (Ensign and wife) then if you have your hearts set on going to either corpus christi, vance, or moody for primary than you can request to have your follow on orders changed (you would do this with the people who are in charge of a pool). All this info may be over your head right now, but just know that if you are a married SNA that is going to OCS, you will be able to move your wife to pensacola after OCS at government expense.

What about moving her before OCS? Any way to get that paid for even if the payback doesn't come until after OCS?

Also, are you saying that married SNA's automatically get orders to Whiting (at least right now - I know things change)?
 
I know you can't get it paid for before you graduate OCS, would if you attrite?
 
Do you know if you can get those "follow on" orders if you are getting married the week after graduating OCS? Or, are we on our own getting me out to Florida for API?

If you want your wife out before OCS, they don't reimburse you for it. This situation gets kind of complicated so If I were you I would talk to PSD in pensacola about this.

SNA's get follow on orders to Whiting if you want your wife moved out to pensacola after OCS. However, due to the need for students at other primary locations (moody, vance, corpus) I know guys that had follow on orders to whiting out of OCS and then they got them changed to the primary location of their choice.

Is he in OCS right now?

If so, this is one of those "special" situations that PSD may have loopholes to help you get moved out to pensacola. However, he would need to talk to the PSD people in the last few weeks of OCS.

If he isn't in OCS yet, than my suggestion would be that you consider getting the official part of getting married (i.e. license, justice of the peace) done before he leaves for OCS and then do your ceremony after he finishes. This would probably make things more simple. And you would get BAH while he's at OCS to boot. But that is just a suggestion, I can understand that circumstances may not allow this.

He is in OCS right now, so just doing it isn't an option - unless one can figure out how to do it in the middle of OCS - not something I'm sure I want to get him to try! :)

I'll ask him to talk to the PSD people. When do you think he should start talking to them?
 
In week 10, he will get a brief from a guy at PSD. This would be the most appropriate time for him to ask questions regarding this situation.

I recall someone in my class who had this situation and I believe the navy paid for the move. However, I don't know if PSD had to perform their paperwork "magic" to get it to happen or not. In any case, the PSD in pensacola is pretty good. If they can't get it done, then it probably can't be done.

Another of my friends who got married after OCS will be here next week and I will ask him then what they did.
 
Just my .02...if he is MARINES...do it as soon as possible...otherwise in a short time (after he is formally assigned to a squadron I believe...but don't quote me on that..) before he can get married he will have to get the "approval" of several of his commanding officers, and they will have to meet you and decide if you 2 should be married....
