I seem to be getting more mileage out of humor than salient professional advice. :D

I'm noticing this seems to be the theme as a whole on the site lately.

John should install a mod that turns your rep bar into a "humor meter."

Breaking news.....

Mexico selects Sukhoi Su-27 for strategic surveillance
The Mexican navy has selected Sukhoi’s Su-27 over the Saab/BAE Systems Gripen to equip its first air defence unit.

Head of the service Adm Armando Sánchez Moreno says the new fleet of 10 fighters will enable the navy to carry out “strategic surveillance” over key areas of Mexico’s coastline.

Preliminary selection work was initiated in early 2005, and the navy is now entering into contract negotiations with Russia’s Rosboronexport agency for the purchase of eight single-seat Su-27s and two Su-27UB two-seat trainers. Local sources indicate that the entire package – which also includes spare parts, tools and personnel training – is worth slightly over $410 million.

Air defense against WHAT?

Lots of illegal air traffic there and about. Ever read Clear and Present Danger? The book had something the movie omitted...drug smugglers being knocked out of the sky by an F-15.

I have read that book many times... and I find it hard to believe that the Mexicans would spend ALL that money on SU-27s to knock a small unarmed drug runner out of the sky....

They have F-5s... those would be more than enough to do the job. So would any of their H-60s armed with crew served weapons...

Not that I think they would even have the cajones to actually engage a drug runner...

1) The Mexicans didn't say this was a specific use for their Flankers, it was just supposition based on the existing problem as noted by Clear and Present Danger (I actually hope they want to come north to act as adversaries for US from time to time or meet at the border).

2) If it is an intended use, the F-5 is not necessarily a good platform due to its legs and limited radar detection and track capability especially looking down in clutter. Before Customs became ICE, they didn't even try to use their H-60s in long range intercept role (they were used in final phase of intercept when smuggler was landing) so suggestion that it would be "more enough to do the job" isn't realistic. The high end smuggling going on involves sophisticated tactics and equipment. These are not Cessna 150 Bug Smashers being used. Try twin turbos with thousands of mile range and 250+ performance. Be pretty difficult to chase one down in a variant of Blackhawk doing less than 200.

Doubtful. Can't intercept something too well when they're flying just as fast or faster than you. I would assume (I could be wrong, helo bubbas let me know) that a helo is more of a close (point) intercept tool, not anything of range.
