What was the Captain shooting at if he is qualifying? Looks like there'd just be water.

Stuff like that is often called a FAMFIRE (familiarization fire). It's more about getting reps firing a crew served gun, but sometimes rifles will be shot. Sometimes there might be a big Killer Tomato to shoot at, other times, not so much.

Had a little company on the range last week (zoom in- left of the closest berm). With the right rifle, ammo, and my truck nearby, it was tempting to fill the freezer. Literally everything I needed except deer season.

Funny thing was, they came across the range AFTER I had shot a couple of groups. I guess the deer in these parts are used to the sound of rifle fire.

That’s the first time I’ve been mistaken for one of those…

I shoot well enough, especially with the .308 at 125y. ;)
Maybe the deer have become self-aware of the regs, and are now just fucking with you at the range...I wouldn't put it past them.

Me neither. My guess is, come deer season, they will be nowhere to be found, just like the last 2 years I have hunted.

Of course, I don’t hunt on this range, either.

Update on my Polymer 80 build - project gun, Comp, Primary Arms reflex optic (RMR footprint), cheap light, extended mag release. Glock Gen 3 platform commodity components. Shoots very well and accurate.

What are your thoughts on the compensator - is there any tradeoff of reduced recoil vs reduced projectile velocity?
A. Looks cool
B. Shoots flat and does the job - not that 9mm gives much muzzle rise to begin with.

Have not chrono'd this setup with my standard range handloads yet!

But for a "cheap" gun, its a fun build. Glock parts are, like an AR, the Lego of firearms now.

I notice that new condition LE Trade-In Glock 17 Gen 4 are now going for <$300 at retail. So this is no longer an exercise even of a "affordable, cheap" gun.

These are great deals! The constant trade of LE trade-in guns is really something. It seems many agencies and departments are on a merry-go-round of sweetheart deals where brands attempt to get in and displace a competitor - offering to buy up a department/agency's current stock of weapons to incentivize a switch. Gen 3 Glocks can be found in bulk/wholesale now at $100/ea in many cases. Same for older Sig P320s. M&Ps, Beretta, etc.

Especially now that .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .45 GAP, 10mm have "jumped the shark" in LE

LE surplus/trade-in wheel guns however, seem to fetch a premium. I would love to have a modern era FBI S&W Model 13 in .357. (E.g. duty weapon of Special Agent Clarice Starling)
