Oceana and the jet noise crusade
I'm under approach end of 32 which isn't used that much, but when it is, my wife always wants me to call the base and complain (of course I'm loving every minute of it). One former base CO said when they checked caller ID of complaints, one of frequent numbers was from a Tomcat XO. Upon asking him about it and correlating the time of calls, turns out it was the spousal unit. Calls stopped after that.
Shameful part of Citizens Concerned About Jet Noise (CCAJN) is that founder is a retired Navy Captain (non aviator of course) who just never let up....asked for Environmental Impact Studies...one thing after another under banner of seeking meaningful solutions (theirs)...then BRAC basically says OK, get rid of housing around the base (nonstarter and poison pill to give jets to Florida, then they balk, so now what?). Our friendly retiree says he never meant to close the base....say what? Check out their website.....http://http://www.jetnoise.org/01_WhoWeAre/A_whoweare.html
Note under founder's bio that he retired in 97 and founded CCAJN in 98 and seems he made it his new passion holding chair until 03. The home values they seek to perserve will be in major hurt locker if the base closes but htey say base could be used for something else...right! (in a BRAC environment...move the jets and it's curtains)
Funny thing that Naval Academy has a retiree attacking them relentlessly as a totalitarian institution:http://http://www.newtotalitarians.com/Essays.html
Another retiree has made the V-22 his obsession as coordinator of the V-22 "Red" Ribbon panel (as opposed to the government "Blue" Ribbon panel). I looked and couldn't find anyone else but him shouting about the V-22 and calling the PM a liar: http://http://www.combatreform.com/coldunnexposesgyrenelies.htm
Common thread here? Fairly senior retirees get obssessed after leaving the service and start howling at military that pays their retirement...not they aren't entitled to free speech, but these guys seem really over the top and don't seem to be satisfied regardless of what government says in response to their "crusades". Maybe it's the attention or empowerment of making government respond....someone with a psych degree ought look at that possibility. Seems like Briar Rabbit and the Tar Baby from the government view.
