Naval Aviation Cowboy Aesthetic

Obviously we've all seen Top Gun, and maybe some of you have noticed that Maverick always wears cowboy boots. I hadn't given this much thought, but after seeing interview from Tomcat Tales w/ Snort Snodgrass about how old timer Crusader dudes used to wear cowboy boots while flying I became curious -- is this a thing? Are there many/any modern-day aviators who merge the 'western' cowboy aesthetic as part of naval aviation culture?

Here's the link to the clip I'm referencing, great story:

I think you’re mistaken. In all the F-18 flight scenes he is wearing proper navy boots. Same for the older movie. In the newer one, he is flying in an F-18 and I imagine the navy had him dressed appropriately.

As for the old days…maybe…my dad wore ankle height “navy boon dockers” when he flew the F-8. EDIT - I am mistaken. I looked at some old pictures and he is wearing the boon dockers in the FJ Fury, but when he shifts to Crusaders he is in combat boots. Maybe an equipment or safety change?
