Navy Advertising

Does anybody have any idea why the Navy does not spend money advertising on t.v. compared to the Army or Air Force?
 
I've seen plenty of Navy TV ads...and ours definitely beats the Army and AF ones. Especially that stupid Army of One crap.

Maybe it's a regional thing, cause I get plenty of Army (two bases near me), Air Forces are starting to pick up) but I can't remember seeing a Navy one in a lllonng time.
 
That Navy info-mercial w/ David Robinson runs a lot in the heartland, but I haven't seen it in VA or down here in FL at all.

That Army of One is about the stupidest concept I've ever heard. An instructor at TBS stated it nicely: "You show me an Army of One, and I'll show you a dead soldier." The funniest thing I've seen recently was an Army recruiting poster w/ the big "Army of One" slogan at the top, and two soldiers standing next to each other in mtn warfare whites. I guess they can't count either.
 
In washington state, we get all of the commercials.
Mostly it is Navy ads, cuz we have 3 bases within a 100 miles, but we do see a lot of AF and Army stuff (we have one base each here).
Oh yeah, and the marines are advertised here.
 
When you consider the "force shaping" that's going on right now, it's not surprising there isn't a whole lot of advertising. I, for one, am glad for it. The majority of sailors will never do any of the stuff in the ads, and that leads to unhappy sailors that you have to manage.

The Army, on the other hand, wants people bad; bad enough to creat a new blue to green program for turning sailors into soldiers, so you should anticipate seeing Army commercials all the time.
 
Speaking of commercials... how about Marine commercials??? I love them... you never see anything about "Money for college" or "This is what our soldiers do in their time off"... it is always about doing something cool, climbing mountain clifs, fighting, being all that you can in life.... just seeing those gives me a little bit more respect for the Marine Corp.
 
I always loved what George C. Scott said in his speech at the beginning of the movie "Patton."

"Now, an Army is a team. It eats, sleeps, breathes, fights, and dies as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bogus bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality, on a Saturday evening, don't know anything more about real battle, than they do about fornicade!"

I also always wondered how many poor souls joined the Navy by reg. enlistment after seeing Top Gun, thinking they could become fighter pilots, only to learn that such a thing is only an opportunity if one is an officer (the Navy saw its highest amount of recruits in history that year).

i was watching VH1 or something the other day about Top Gun and they had Michael Ironside on. He said he was at a diner and some guys came up to him and were pissed that it was his fault that they joined the Navy. Apparently the Navy wasnt about jet fighting and picking up chicks, but swabbing the decks and working for a living. Who'd a thunk it?????????
 
Yeah, I saw Tom Cruise being interviewed by some guy, and he said, "So, you've been a fighter pilot, a secret agent, and a samurai?.....You know man, I joined the Navy because of you, after seeing Top Gun. I was gonna be a pilot. But then I crashed my (names an aircraft) and lost my wings, so..." :confused: :) I just laughed my head off, cuz he said it so casually, like, "Ahh, I was a pilot, but then I crashed and lost my wings, so anyways...."
 
the bad thing is (maybe true may not be true) that Tom Cruise was all into his role going far enough to actually make enlisted folks salute him while in his flight suit. i would love to hear if this was true or not. i want to know if my respect for him should go to the deeper levels of hell.
 
Yeah you should, cuz he threw a fit over how Brad Pitt was so much taller than him when making "Interview With A Vampire." His character is thus as tall as Brad Pitt in the movie, which is balony. Antonio Banderas was cool about his height; he is short too, but he didn't mind it and thus his character is his natural height. In Top Gun, Kelly McGillis actually was an inch taller than him; she had to stand in a hole they made.

As for enlisted men saluting Cruise, well, if Cruise was so new at the time as an actor that some enlisted men didn't realize who he really was (i.e. was he in uniform when this happened??), I could see that; but if they knew who he was and still saluted him, well then I think they were incredibly stupid and Tom Cruise should have told them the movie was fake and not to join enlisted to become a fighter pilot.

But hey, I have heard that some semi-professional wrestlers who play at the semi-pro levels (to get their reputations up to hopefully go pro someday) sometimes do their role as a bad guy so well that they have to get escorted out with a bodyguard cuz people follow them wanting to beat them up since they are such a jerk (the people forget they are just acting).

That's kind of funny if you think about it, this big ol' dude needs a body guard to protect him. (Kind of like Chuck Norris needing a bodyguard.
