Ok, I have a few questions here...

1.) Uniform is Service Dress White or better. I looked up the regs, and Service Dress White has ribbons, while Dinner Dress White (which I'd assume falls into the "or better" category) has medals. What is more appropriate?

2.) "No covers requested": I'm guessing this means that I don't have to have my cover when I'm walking into the O-club. Does it exempt me from wearing a cover when I'm picking up my date as well?

3.) How do these things work? I went to all of the Navy/MC Balls in ROTC. How does the real Navy format compare?

4.) Who else is going?

Uh... go ahead and be brave and do it.

Sometimes, I walk 10 feet from my car to my house in the bag WITHOUT a cover... SHHH! Don't TELL! ;)

Sorry, I'm just in a dick mood tonight.

I'm sure you'll be fine. As for medals/ribbons, just ask around and see what other JOs are doing. I know at dining outs we went dinner dress (mini medals).

I was just wondering in case for whatever reason I was outside for a while.

I don't actually know anyone else who's going to ask them about the ribbons/medals.

I had the pleasure of joining HS-6 for their dining out this summer. No covers requested, and we went down town SD afterward. No covers means no covers at all usually.

It depends on what you have available, when Im going to an event like this I normally go in Mess dress since as an academy puke I have both white and black mess dress. However don't go out and drop 400 bucks just for one night(especially if you have chokers).

As for the ribbons vs medals I would normally suggest wear medals since they are more formal (Large ones with Chokers since mini metals on them just look plain wierd).I normally wear mess dress i wear mini medals. Though Medals can be a pain in the ass to prep especially when you begin to get a nice collection of fruit salad.

Suck it up and dont wear the cover you dont want to have to keep up with it. Although the girls tend to love wearing them later in the night as you walk them to the car. Remember cover edicate if a girl puts on your cover you have a right to a kiss from her.

Show up for part of the cocktail hour and then enter when they open for seating. Do have a great time with your date and your tablemates and Dont worry about it. Just Make sure you have a DD if your going to be drinking.

I actually prefer Dining Ins the most because of the close comraderie and they are so much fun. Its awsome because your there as a unit/squadron whatever and people intentionally go overboard. Then they earn a trip to the grog bowl and have to preform for the mess. The only reason why I didnt goto the grog at the one I was at in june was because I was dressed the same as the Admiral Who was the guest!

Yeah the one I went to last October in DC had us going Downtown to Murphy's in Alexandria.

Word to the Wise... Don't try to go down Wisconsin Ave at 630 pm on a friday night take the GW parkway. I was tardy though luckly for me my tardiness didnt involve a trip to the grog. What made it worse was the there the admiral who headed my community was the president of the mess yuck.

That being said, the Dining Out I went to even the academy grads were wearing chokers. My 'experience' only counts so much though, because I've only been to one proper Dining Out. I will say it was remarkably like the ones we've had here at the UNM NROTC unit, just a little more out of control. (i.e Our guest speaker at HS-6 started the food fight)

No covers is no covers. The cover is an optional item with mess dress/dinner dress. Marines may be different. I wen't to the reserve ball in New Orleans and we all went to the french quarter after without covers.

It works just like a traditional Navy B-day ball. If you went to the ones in ROTC it should be very similar.

I went to the one in Pensacola last year and it was a good time. Its nice if some people you know are going so you have some people to talk to. Otherwise Im sure you'll make new friends.

There are pics on the MWR website from last year, which I used to figure out what to wear. Looks like the JOs pretty much all had on chokers with mini medals. I wouldn't want to be the only guy there with jumbo medals on.

Just tell em you were coming from a change of command. Make up some bullshit. That's a key skill.
