... but in the pictures shown there, the tail gun appears to not be in the up position. Every other picture I've seen has had the gun locked up to avoid any possible incident.

In the ol' days ... that was seen as a "non-hostile" gesture.

I guess modern times call for modern methods??? :)

Maybe so, I don't know. What I can tell from those pics is the Tu-95 is a big bird.

No asskicking required nor desired ... as you're just "young" ... :)

How's this for due regard???

@ 400 KIAS+ overhead this KASHIN ("Cash it in") and I'll let YOU guesstimate the altitude -- I can't/won't remember. Check out the #1 SA-N-3 launcher "trackin' me" .... the Straight Flush radar was lighting up my RAW gear like a Christmas tree .... but at least the forward 76mm mount couldn't track me ..... :D

Or course ... had this been .... "real" .... one of us would have killed the other way before the shutter on my PENTAX clicked ... I'm pretty sure I would have walked away based on superior skill and cunning .... :)

Well thank you sir for sparing me. I'll try to keep my mouth shut in the future regarding things I've not yet learned--I'm pretty sure that covers almost all things Navy, so I guess this is my last post. jk. Anyway that picture is awesome and your introduction of the 'incident' is hilarious. Thanks for an entertaining post.

2000 feet isn't exactly buzzing the ship. Granted, if there was a recovery underway, they blew right through the marshal stack, and caused a near-midair, that might be different.

Heck, the FAA minimums for VFR flight are 1000ft above the highest obstacle within a 2000ft radius in built up areas, or 500 feet in sparsely populated areas. Not that that applies in international waters, but you get the idea.

Understood sir, and thank you to everyone for the info. I'm glad to have the real word on what goes on during these sorts of happenings. I'd hate to be OOD on the bridge of some ship someday and scramble a bunch of Hornets to intercept and splash a Piper Cherokee for a simple flyover. Unless he was towing a "GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY" banner. Then that's "different flying, different politics" as they say :)

Occasionally, we would have a tail gun track us. In that case, we just moved out past his gimbal limits and continued the escort.

I'd say a little lower than that. This is a typical view from a helo.

When you say "women," is that some Navy terminology for a weapon of some type ...?
It is .... and it's definitely a "weapon" of sorts and a hazard to aviation when you do a low SSSC fly-by and they take a break from their sun bathing, stand up topless/bottomless, wave, smile, and mouth something to the effect of:

"Hey G.I. ... you gotta' girlfriend here ... ??" :)

.... and you've been at sea for several weeks ....
