Navy Pilot/ NFO "Rolling" Boards MAR/APR 2013

Hey all! I received a call from Chief last night and he told me there was an opening for OCS this Sunday, April 21st. I obviously jumped on the opportunity, went into his office today, signed some last minute paperwork and received my Selection Letter for the NFO slot (all within a matter of an hour or so). I'll finish up the last of the paperwork tomorrow and will be sworn in.

A little bit on my background: Bachelor of Science in Aviation from Western Michigan University with a 3.00 CGPA. 5/6/5 on the ASTB. I'm pretty sure my Motivational Statement and my Professional Reference letters are what helped me get selected as my GPA and ASTB were sub-par and not that competitive. (GISpirate12 and everyone, make sure your Motivational Statement is outstanding and you get substantial references as they'll help you make up the slack in the aptitude test and/or grades. I know it varies from board to board, but those facets seemed to serve me pretty well!)

I can't tell you how many different emotions are racing through me right now: excitement and nervousness mainly :) . I've waited, we've ALL waited, for SO long and it's finally here. I intend on doing my very best!

I can't speak for everyone as the completion of your kit and the diligence of your Recruiter will determine when you will be able to head out, but I was told the next OCS date is May 12th so I'm sure most of you will be hearing back within the coming weeks. Patience is the key. Continue to prepare physically and mentally as you have been.

The posts on this forum have helped me tremendously in my preparation and I thank you all. I wish all of you the best of luck and I hope to see you guys/gals in the coming months!

HOOYAH!!

Congratulations SNFO select! What were some of the points you focused on in your motivational statement?

No, I can't... But I know there is a system that monitors your applications progress along it's way. It's an information management system. I know recruiters can access it. NavyOffRec has mentioned it on this forum somewhere....

Thanks

Good on ya. Congratulations! When did you receive word that your application had made it to a board/ you had been selected?

I assume that you already knew you had been pro-recd and today was a suprise on being final selected/getting an ocs date?

When did you submit your packet?

My packet was submitted with my DQ medical sometime early in January, I believe? I became physically qualified in mid-March, medical was re-submitted and I was just notified yesterday of an opening in OCS this Sunday.

The process can take up to a few months depending on the overall completion (and missing information) of your kit, MEPS results and the diligence of your Recruiter in pushing the paperwork along.

Thanks Zogsxr! Yeah, I found out that I was formally selected for NFO/SWO in mid-February, but I still had to get physically qualified, which was completed mid-March.

Yeah, I'm still surprised. Everything's moving so fast now. I was sitting by idly for awhile and probably still would have been until OCS on May 12th, but now that I'm going, everything's moving at a rapid pace!

Ya! I guess so! Three days to get your life in order. Wow. Not sure i could do it that quick! I hope to see you in R.I.!

Gotcha, so were you selected at the official March board or is that unknown?

I was selected back in February (even without a physically qualified medical). Becoming physically qualified "sealed the deal". It seems like they were waiting on an opening for OCS and I was next in the queue. If there wasn't this opening, I would have rolled to May 12th I'm sure.

Congratulations SNFO select! What were some of the points you focused on in your motivational statement?

RiseR 25, here are some of the main points I focused on:
  • Strong introduction with an empathetic, brief personal history
  • Alignment of your philosophy and core values with that of the Navy
  • Examples of your personal work ethic, virtues, values and ideals
  • A strong conclusion, reiterating all the former points and the desire to become an Officer in the United States Navy
Haha, a thesaurus also came in handy. I'm sure sprinkling in some big words and nice vocabulary helped some.
Hope that helps!

Yes it does, thank you very much. I'm not a very strong writer. My emphasis was on having an engineering degree and how that would make me a strong candidate for SNA. I did throw in the core values, but it looks like you did a very good job of aligning yourself with them.

Congratulations and Good luck at OCS!

Nothing to report here. I just hope they actually held the board. Either way I doubt we would hear about any results until Monday/Tuesday. This is assuming they are operating under a similar time frame to the March board. Though, we may not receive as rapid turnaround.
