That's supposedly the infamous "Body Bag" speech where a Chief Petty Officer attempts to hit home on the importance of "attention to detail" Basically telling the plebes that they're in a serious business and when details are just pushed aside and things aren't exactly followed... the consequences are that people die.

When I watched the video of my friends class... the CPO made them all hold hands with the mid next too them and said something to the effect of "these are you shipmates: take care of each other."

There is audio for this picture here.

They went through that at age 18? Those are some tough little bastards. How did they ever survive? They must have used teamwork to overcome the odds.
I didn't understand how the academy could be more intense than ‘the nam' until I saw the pics along with the audio, thanks for sharing.

Well that's one reason why they put an age limit on those who enter the academy to "before your 23rd birthday." To a kid fresh out of high school, i'd think it's plenty scary enough. When my friend went through the Academy, they had Marine Gunnies (i assume former DI's and Sgt Instructors) and Navy SEALS overseeing the 2nd class detailers during plebe indoctrination to ensure that they did it "right."
Ok before you give me the speech on never going to USNA I went to the summer seminar. No really I am in one of those Corps of Cadets and I have been to Marine OCS so I can say with a lot of confidence that when one of my upperclassmen made a threat and when the Platoon Sgt made a threat I was more afraid of who? For the initial shock yes those upperclassmen can be scary but then you realize hey he/she is only in that position because they were born a year ahead of me. So what I am saying is just because they have the power to make you PT does not mean it is going to make you a better officer. The Marines have TBS for a reason and everybody even ROTC Nazis go through OCS Quantico style. My .02 cents

I really hate that NROTC has no sort of Boot Camp, there is a week 'indoc' with some pimply faced kid telling you to get off his deck.....now that is fear...

How did this thread turn into an I.F.N.A.G argument? Let's get it back on track before it really starts to get out of control. If anyone wants to know the meaning of I.F.N.A.G shoot me a PM.

I have no idea where that came from, or what the point was, but I’m wrong, you’re right.

I think the original theme was should a Navy officer be allowed a Marine commission? Some are saying that the academy should, while others shouldn’t. As I understand, the USMC won’t distinguish between types of commissions, but if you want to wear the uniform, then TBS is the birthplace.

I would definitely understand why some would feel a little weird about wearing the Navy uniform in a Cobra squadron, or something to that effect…but that is not for us to decide, just rant and rave a little.

If anything, i'd think Navy guys would be honored to have a chance to pin on the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and be part of the the pointy end of the stick of the Naval Service.

Yeah, I mean, the Navy doesn't have ANY pointy ends to it. I mean, there are no warriors in the Navy. In fact, the entire Marine Corps has a COMPLETE monopoly on that part of the military. GET OVER YOURSELF. The Marine Corps would NOT EXIST without the Navy, and the Navy would lose half its mission without the Marine Corps. Grow up.

As far as commissioning sources go, NO ONE CARES. God, wait till half of you get to Primary. NO ONE GIVES A DAMN where you came from. You are not special because you went to the Academy, or came from NROTC, or went through OCS. Get a grip people, it's like a bunch of 6 year old children in here arguing who is better than who.

We all know we're better than the Air Force and Army. :icon_smil

Sorry to bust your bubble, but i'd prefer going Navy for a variety of reasons. However, i have a huge amount of respect for Marines. I never said that there were no warriors in the Navy (SEALS, EOD, Aviators, etc...). I was addressing the claim that one who would want to switching from the Navy to the Marines somehow lacks of loyalty to the Navy when in fact the Marines are the tip of the spear of the navy.

Last I checked, your info says you're an undergrad/student. Tell me that has changed. Because right now I'm wondering why you think you can even speak on the matter? I'd really LOVE for you to go tell that to the crew of the USS Cole, or the USS Stark, or maybe the countless submarines that get themselves into places they should not even be near. Maybe all the Cold Warriors that would have been in the largest naval battle in history if the Bear decided it wasn't going to play nice anymore. Or how about every single ship that goes into the Persian Gulf and gets lit-up with anti-ship missile radar and would have but mere seconds to react. But yeah, I guess just because you're not hauling an M-16 around means you aren't the tip of the spear.

Regarding why i think i can speak on the matter. I have friends who graduated from the academy and i'm sick of seeing them being trashed as being "elitist" for having gone their or somehow "weaker" for being indoctrinated by upperclassmen rather than directly by Marine DI's or SGT instructors. What i say is in defense of them, not me. Trash me all you want, but be fair with them.

Academy kids get ragged on because when they graduate, a lot of them are Prima Donna little ****heads. This tends to disappear once they realize they aren't special, that no one cares, and that the Academy is over, they're in the real Navy now. I AM NOT TRASHING THE ACADEMY. I have MANY Academy friends and they're great guys. Most of them just needed to learn how to live in the real world, it's an adjustment for them, and it's completely understandable, so long as they don't keep acting like morons. Like anything, it's usually just a few a@@holes making the rest look like idiots. You see a similar thing with NROTC and OCS guys, though the kind of idiocy is different due to the nature of the backgrounds.

That was good, a nice laugh after a wideman hop.

I don't think its the flight suit as much as the neon pink undershirts you guys like to wear. Why not get a flight suit that matches the undershirt?

look at the mission statements between the two branches for fun sometime

while being a grunt is without a doubt dangerous, have you ever been on the flight deck of a carrier during flight ops, then picture that at night with a wet, greasy deck. those guys aren't carrying weapons but that's not to say their job is anymore easy, I would say infact that its probably more dangerous than the grunt's job
