Also, I find the rock climbing in the ad to be more metaphorical, sort of a way to show the hard work and rewards that one should expect from joining the Corps. And on a similar note, does anybody else think that the Army commercials are getting better, from what they were a year ago?

The army commercials are way better then they used to be. The one where the Soldier comes home and he explains to his buddies that he works with computers comes to mind. Very cool.

is there some correlation between a person's affinity for hard rock / heavy metal music and a desire to serve in the Navy? I notice most of the Navy commercials play toward the headbanger crowd... myself included.

I wonder how this plays with the Navy's desire to recruit more minorities who tend to listen to different types of music?

I never was a fan of the "Army of One" motto, but the best Army ad, IMO, is the one where the guys are reconning the dudes in the technical. Something along the lines of "...you're mission is to kill a bunch of bad guys, you have 3 days of food. It's day 12." I thought it was well done, but I hadn't seen the mini-van ad yet.

As for mini-van drivers. I think they're issued when you get the lobotomy. Either a mini-van or a SUV that isn't really an SUV.

The modern SUVs they got out there are absolutely worthless crap. They're oversized cars. Independent suspensions for something that's supposed to be good for off-road? Give me a break. Not to mention the ground clearance and weight of these things is atrocious. The Porche and BMW ones are ridiculous. I bet you'd snap an axle if you actually put them in some muck.

Yeah, that's the one. I guess the key ingredient to that ad was the Barrett. I don't know guns that well, other than in passing, but I know that one.

BMW doesn't even pretend the X series has anything to do with the utility part of being an SUV. They are designated SAVs (Sports Activity Vehicle)- if i remember the reasoning correctly BMW acknowledged that the chances of their customers actually using an X series hauling anything more then shopping bags/luggage or venturing on a surface less prepared then crushed gravel/packed dirt was slim to none.

I just watched a Top Gear ep about the Cayenne. Turns out it actually is quite capable as a SUV. Expensive as hell and pays for some OPEC Prince's college tuition, but capable.

Guys that rip on mini-vans are too scared to step into the real role that defines manhood, Fatherhood.

Why Mini-vans are great.

#1 My min-van can take my whole family wherever we want and it saves on gas. That means more money to buy guns, fishing rods etc.

#2 Wife likes it. Happy wife; happy life.

#3 In the great Colorado Blizzard of April '05. My All-Wheel drive mini-van got my son to the hospital in white-out conditions when the Interstate was closed. It saved his life.

#4 Makes playing Clark Griswold believable.

#5 Eliminates all those hot women bothering you.

Capable as in rock climbing and mudding or as in hard-pack dirt? Hardpack isn't offroading

(I ask because one of my friends thinks that cars racing on hardpack are off-road capable)

I think the min-van captures the spirit of the Griswolds. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Family Vacation come out before mini-vans?
