New PT Uniform

They issued us silkies when we did our big bag/little bag purchases, and then they gave us 2 sets of trunk style shorts when we did uniform Issue at OCS. The silkies were great for under your uniform especially for boots and utes runs, but the trunks made me feel less like I was a 70's highschool track runner and everyone thats seen me in silkies who isnt a Marine has the same reaction of "WTF are you wearing."

Its funny how while at OCS you dotn even think twice about it. Then the thought of how gay it is hits you

I thought 'Napoleon Dynamite' put those socks back into style?

Maybe I'm too set in my green-on-green ways to appreciate the... Uh.. Shall we say, "Fashion subtleties," associated with bright red-and-yellow warm up suits/track suits/whatever. Regardless of the fact that people here at Cherry Point insist on plowing into formations of green sweats-wearing Marines, I'm not sure red/gold is the way to go. Too flashy for me (and apparently the rest of the DASC Marines, too). Maybe the recruiters can wear them instead?

Perhaps you would prefer if every Marine was issued a bicycle upon completion of recruit training? :D

Now that's something I could get behind, although I suspect the urge to steal would be difficult for most Marines to overcome.

Green-on-green ain't all it's cracked up to be. There are a lot better materials out there to work out in. I'll also hand it to the Army on one score. When I've gone to an Army gym, everyone's wearing their PT uniform. It does look sharper than the assortment of grungies you see on a Marine base. Also, one uniform everything would make things look better. At a Marine formation, half the guys' green t-shirts are cruise T's or from the unit, the other half are standard green undershirts.

I hope durability and price are key criteria, because I don't worry about tearing green sweats--new ones are about $10-15. I rip a $100 Gore-Tex warmup jacket at a unit soccer game, I'll be pissed.

I wonder if the people who "designed" the new PT unifoms have put any thought into just how much it's gonna cost good ol' Cpl Shmuckatelli....

I have to agree with you.... $15 green on green VS $??? new stuff

Another thing to add to the seabag. At least the green on green can be worn with cammies as well. And of course many wear the sweat top under the blouse on a cold day. Now you will have to have a bunch of PT shirts and a bunch of green shirts, and of course the green sweatshirt. The sweats also make nice sleepwear (at least at OCS in that cold squad bay). Sleeping in windbreakers wont be so comfortable. Green on green can be worn in the field (shorts, shirts, sweats, etc...), but having yellow and red, and reflective lining (if they have that) is not exactly tactical.

Therefore I conclude, that we will still have green on green stuff along with the new PT gear. It also states on the MC uniform board survey that green on green will remain in the seabag (but it doesnt say until when).

What's wrong with scarlet and gold? That's what was worn when I went through PLCs.
I must,in all fairness, state that I have seen the Navy running in formation while I was on on layover in San Diego. At least I presume it was a formation run; there wasn't an ice cream truck in sight. But then my eyesight and hearing ain't what it used to be.

But there, see? You knew it was the Navy. You knew it was the Navy because of the cool reflective t-shirts, right? Not because of the fat bodies and the van trailing the formation full of people, right? :D

That platoon of young marines running around my base in the morning could very well be some crazy Georgia militia or even some cult that has come to take over the base! How can I tell with the plain green gear?!?!?!

...besides - I thought Marines loved telling everyone they were Marines. Whats wrong with a sign on your chest? ;)

Cost shouldn't be a factor, that’s what the uniform allowance if for right?

Instead of buying the last round of beers, buy a new Pt shirt and shorts... not that tough honestly.

I think you may be underestimating the cost on junior enlisted...not even counting the possibility that those same Marines are in debt and already having financial issues...

Here is HQMC logic:

"Our Marines have to purchase new uniforms regularly, so we will give them an additional once a year bonus to help defray the costs of said uniforms, and everything adds up."

Here is PFC logic:

"My sweats are barely even ripped at all...Beer money it is!"

Edit:

Not that it matters in the slighest, but my $.02: Stick w/ green on green.

Cheap, Versatile (worn with cammies), Practical (pajamas in the field), Tactical (Can wear a reflective belt when needed), and Lightweight (seabag factor).

When I go to the gym on base I don't particularly care if everyone is wearing the same clothes to exercise during liberty.

Short of a flashing neon sign saying "UNITED STATES MARINE," I don't think average civilians are necessarily going to know who is running in formation, or why people would even run in formation. Joe Six-pack doesn't know what an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor is and probably wouldn't recognize it if worn on the back of a PTing Marine. The high and tight haircut would probably be more of a giveaway - or the fact that you are probably right next to, or inside of, a Marine Corps base...
