The mids that we sponsor didn't bitch so much about that when we saw them this weekend. The only thing they complained about was how they were hungry as shit because there wasn't enough food...Again, let's consider the sources: The Baltimore Sun and MIDN who just got their liberty time cut in half.
I think they're qualified enough to know 8 pieces of food doesn't feed 12 people. Think what you will about the Naval Academy and their whiny mids, but they can handle that level of math.

What makes the midshipmen a questionable source? I'd be willing to be my paycheck that you complained at least once about the food at the Academy when you were there - and we got plenty. Midshipmen, parents, and local eateries are all saying that the mids aren't getting enough food. Who the fuck do you count as "qualified"? The 3-star, just because he's a three star? That's not what I am getting at. Ok, so one day, two days, things weren't right, the B Sun found a couple biscuit and pizza shortages. That doesn't mean there was short sightedness or lack of planning, ESPECIALLY when those problems are corrected by the end of the week. Can you judge the entire "program" (for lack of a better word) a failure? Hardly. Even if there were problems at 40 tables, that is less than 10% of all MIDN.
You can't judge the quality of a large process/program based on some anecdotal evidence collected from sources that are questionable to begin with.
I'm not judging the overall system. As a matter of fact, I think he's got the right idea in a lot of cases. I'm saying that someone fucked up if it takes a week for the logistics to be in place. How 'bout saying "next week we start mandatory meals" rather than "sorry there wasn't enough food this week"...Ok, maybe I am wrong, but I hope no one is suggesting that we judge the overall quality of the system based on MIDN handpicked by the B Sun and the 2 or 3 MIDN you sponsor.
There's no way to argue this one, you're wrong.
As for the economics of the decision not to allow weeknight liberty, do not be surprised if you see a larger complaint from the city of Annapolis come winter time. Commanders make these kinds of mandates when they want to destroy towns. For instance, checking in here our CO said that if the town screwed with us too bad, we just wouldnt shop in kingsville any more. That would change their attitude real quick. The city needs the midshipman business to stay solvent during the dull winter months. Add on top of that, the asinine 0, 0, 1, 3 rule, and you have a recipe for disaster. This new supe will not be making any friends with the local chamber of commerce. Yes, their mission is not to help the city but to train officers, but it really is a symbiotic relationship that needs to be nourished as well.
That's assuming this lasts that long. I say give it a month or so before you start to see some repealing of these decisions. He may be a 3-star, but I'm sure he'll even buckle to pressure. The whole lack of food problem has plagued King Hall my whole time there. The thing was, if you didn't get enough food there you could always go to Dry Dock or Steerage for more, but with that no being allowed anymore (study hour rules), it'll be hell.

Yeah - especially as a plebe... I would actually argue that in the summertime, more restrictive liberty rules and requirements for uniforms would actually benefit the town of Annapolis more. TOURISTS love the middies in uniform, and tourists will be the greatest during weekends...I am sure that the Brigade puts some money into the city, but I don't think it is as big a chunk that it seems like when you are a MIDN.
