New USMC PT running suit

Is the "swinging with the wing" persona of the MAGs a function of workload or of ethos?
Workload. Almost exclusively. The Marines in the squadron are just as much Marines as grunts, however their CONUS garrison workload is generally more than the grunts. Grunts want air support, planes gotta be up. They want 2 planes? Better make it 3 or 4, just in case. They want 4 planes? That's a minimum of 6 that have got to be up. They want 6 planes? Fuggedaboutit. Unit PT sometimes falls by the wayside, especially if you're the only squadron of your T/M/S on deck.

^^What he said. I've seen it from both places now, plus the division. The whole "swing with the wing" is pretty much myth. Do gun squadron Marines go on long humps or do lots of organized PT? No. They rarely if ever have time. They work pretty much 0700-1700 or 1700-0300ish on a good day. Twelve on twelve off on a harder day. Maybe a half hour to an hour for noon chow. Working Saturdays or even 7 days a week is fairly normal. Say once a month or so on average. This is in garrison. Most folks say it gets better on deployment. I think that's just an illusion. They work just as hard if not harder when deployed. They just don't notice it because there's nothing better to do.

In a "ground" air wing unit (MACS, MWSS,IPAC, etc) it's 0730-1630, 5 days a week with an hour+ for chow and PT. Squadron PT/field events are fairly normal. The downside is lots of dets for a month or two with a much higher pace of work. More like the grunts than the "regular" air wing Marines.

If you think as a division officer in a gun squadron that you'll be leading humps or doing the O course, think again. It's all we can do to get them time for the range, MCMAP, and NBC. Often those things (and unfortunately the Marines cutting scores) often lose out to getting up jets.

Five years in Powerline and I never had unit PT once, oh wait, two times we ran as a squadron because some general was visiting and wanted to feel motivated. Other than that...it's all individual responsibility, which unfortunatly translates into more unfit Marines than you'd like to see. But "airwing" Marines are by far the hardest working in the Corps, no doubt.
