no more bear crawls

no more bear crawls at OCS

ya'll are going to miss out on one of the most fun activities

I'll take another one for the team...WTF is a "bear crawl"? Would this, by any chance, be what we referred to as "The Death March" in AOCS circa 1971???

It is "walking" for interminable distances whilst on all fours. "crawling like a bear".

And allow me to ask the OP.... WHY THE FUCK NOT??

So is OCS going to be like AF OTS now? Taps at 2300, laptops, 8 hours of rack time, no yelling or "hurt feelings"?

They are starting to slim down the ways to "pop candidates hearts".

Bear crawl = get in a pushup position. Inch your hands toward your feet and arch your back up. Now move forward. Keep doing so as DI yells crawl and you yell aye sir. It's actually a really good strength workout for shoulders/arms/legs that I'd keep doing if it didn't look absolutely ridiculous.

My DI's facebook says he's not allowed to use them anymore, and he was the most known DI for using bear crawls. I dunno why this is or if it's restricted to only him or the entire command.

Pain for pain's sake always seemed a waste to me. Maybe they'll be replaced with something constructive, like an exercise regimen that people can use on their own in years to come so the navy will cease to be a repository for lazy fat bodies.

Nah. . .probably just more sensitivity training.

Backwards, 1-footed bear crawls, up hill, dragging your "buddy" beneath you with your belt. Those were the days. . .<tear>

I can't think of a single exercise at OCS that had a better efficiency of giving you an overall body strength workout than bear-crawls. It's not just pain for pain's sake -- they worked.

no idea why, i'd like to know myself.

it was a great workout although i hated doing it especially the first two weeks.

crap we did these in the damn police academy here as well... but our damn PT instructor was a former Marine now Texas DPS State Trooper who loved to punish us "Navy" types. wow prolly just like OCS. Bear crawls would just make me want to hibernate afterwards

I would be willing to bet this is because of the preponderance of "unsanitary" goose shit that covers just about everything in Newport. Yet another reason why it was not the best thought out plan to move OCS to RI. I'd be willing to bet it has more to do with infections and disease, than not wanting candidates to bear crawl. I say move it in to the gym.

That would have an interesting psychological effect, knowing that you're about to get a bear crawl killing when you hear 'attack the chop shop.'

Thing is, we bear crawled in the p-way/killzone many times, so if they got rid of it due to goose poop why would they restrict that now?

If you guys still don't know the deal in a few weeks, I'll let you know - well, at least if we're doing them or not.

I heard the grumblings of knee issues caused by slipping in the P-ways/killzone. Whether from sickness caused by goose shit or busted knees in the kill zone, bear crawls present more risk of injury than say push ups or sit ups. I'm not saying I like it, I'm just saying I think I can see their reasoning behind it.
