No more rifle drill?

3. Purpose of Drill. Commanders use drill to:
a. Move units from one place to another in a standard, orderly manner.
b. Provide simple formations from which combat formations may be readily
assumed.
c. Teach discipline by instilling habits of precision and automatic response
to orders.
d. Increase the confidence of junior officers and noncommissioned officers
through the exercise of command, by the giving of proper commands, and by the control of drilling troops.
e. Give troops an opportunity to handle individual weapons.

I graduated on 5 August 05. We did drill for seven weeks (and a bit afterwards if you count other classes' graduation parades) with big heavy M1s just like everyone else. Sword drill is only practiced for the parade so the high ranking candidates can salute and look cool for the command and their families.

The gunnys would pitch a fit if they got rid of drill. They already think we're soft squiddies.

Let the fun times roll!
The gunny's are pitching a fit. My DI informed us (in a sad voice-very unusual for him, normally it's just mean :) recently that we'd be his last class to do rifle drill.

Ah, the kinder and gentler OCS.

Back in the day (all the best stories start "Back in the day"), we had:

O-Course
C-Course
Rifle Drill
Rifle Run
Rose Garden
Grenade Pit

Are the DI's still allowed to yell or so the have to say "Please"?

Sad to see how the program has been satisified on the altar of making very one feel good.

So many changes in just the last few weeks. Things I've heard about just since I got out a little over a month ago.

-Taps to reveille being enforced, no idea how one would finish RLP without a few all nighters
-The terms "beaten" and "killed" to describe RPT sessions, made unacceptable
-The term "female" unacceptable to describe a candidate even if she is one
-Rifle drill going away in the near future
-Candi-O's not being allowed to be ballistic with candidates
-Secured classes(not candi-O) conversing freely amongst themselves in chow hall
-Eighth week RLP going away
-In the future scaling back the DI's role to only the first three weeks and then leaving it to class chiefs and officers

This was all stuff a candidate told me this weekend, if someone who's still over there wants to confirm or add on I'd be interested to hear it.

The future of the Supply Corps
Wow...I feel sort of torn on this one...on the one hand, I imagine this will make everything easier, obviously, which will make everything a lot less stressful, but on the other hand, I sort of feel cheated/disappointed that if all these things are true that I won't be getting the "real" OCS experience...hmmm...I guess either way, if I make it through, I'll be commissioned, so that's all that matters.

As bad as it is (to get rid of drill) the Instructors will always find other ways to make it stressful. It was always harder in everyone else's day, at least that is what all the old fleeters tell me on a daily basis. Easy or hard, I just want my commission, tell me to drill I will drill, tell me to run I will run, 13 weeks is a small price to pay for admission.

Class 04-06 is still doing rifle drill and 8th week RLP. We didn't pull any all nighters and only failed 6 on their first attempt. And there is NO talking in chow hall.

Pretty much all true....

04 won't be having an 8th week from what I have heard. And 07 is the first class to start on the new program.

:tongue2_1 They gotta have their reasons for taking something out. So what are they going to put in its place?

Somebody, somewhere decided that we'd all be better off not doing rifle drill. I got enough rifle drill in high school JROTC. I won't miss it :tongue2_1

here is the truth from class officers at OCS:

Taps to Reveille is being enforce...not bad for RLP, just requires some better time management.

Nothing has changed with regards to RPT...one guy in my class was spreading the rumor that the DIs were not allowed to RPT us anymore until the day that he got us put in the sand for what seemed like half an hour.

The term "female" is still used.

No final word on rifle drill...all still rumors at this point.

NO talking in chow hall except if you are in class 03-06...talking is allowed by the OCR and their class drill instructor authorized it.

8th week RLP is still up in the air for class 04-06, but 05 does not have it.

The plans for the future is to reduce the military training to only the first three weeks. Classes will do their drill at the end of the three weeks and then they probably won't see their DI again. The next six weeks will be purely academics on a semester schedule, and then Candi-O phase should remain unchanged.

Three weeks of military training does not produce the warrior ethos! The net result will be OCS sourced officers becoming second class citizens as the reduction in overall quality becomes apparent. Any reduction of good old military training is a mistake.

This is freak'n crazy. AOCS is supposed to be hard with all the trimmings not some summer time ground school. Heck I would rather see the requirement to take the engineering classes prior to coming down (if you can't figure out how to take an aero class then you should not be flying).

In my humble estimation AOCS was about finding out who wanted to be there and who could handle stress and function well. It weeded out the weak, heck many classes when I went through had 30% completion rate (some less). Too bad it is turning into a summer camp. =(

long live rifle PT, the rose garden, rifle runs and DOR's...

Short story... on the rifle run for my class, just before run in the sand on the way back to battalion, the guy in front of me passed out, pitched his rifle forward into the head of the candidate in front of him, cutting his head. We kept running.
