Vette, you're down there right now, right? How about enlightening us to the truth/falsehood of some of this stuff from the perspective of someone currently in the middle?

Pardon me, just realized you basically already confirmed most of it.

I guess it is nice for some of you guys on AW to have candidates posting while at OCS. But that is just another sign of just how far astray the program has gotten. Is it necessary for candidates to have access to the web for any reason but frivolity?

I was thinking the same thing, what is up with internet access during OCS?

Man, way back when on the boat, we went 45 days without mail and 60 days with a port visit (also no e-mail back then). Different world now.

I didn't go through OCS, but I think it's crap too.

Doesn't mean it was better that way.

Where is internet access had for candidates down at P-cola? In Quantico, if you wanted to send e-mail, you went to General Java's in Q-town while on libo and waited in line with 500 other candidates for the 5 pc's they had. There sure wasn't any e-mail terminals at Brown Field. It would have been funny if someone had asked though.

Absolutely not? A good ol' fashion pen and paper will do the trick to write down their thoughts. Then, when training time is complete and said individuals have gold bars on their collars, THEN post your comments on AW and answer questions.

Three weeks of military training does not produce the warrior ethos!

And another thing. What sort of respect will a young Ensign have for the real warriors they support down in the mud and dust? How can one even begin to appreciate what soldiers, Marines and others have had to endure just to be given the "honor" of eating dust and sleeping on the ground when one has never even drilled with a rifle, run until the limits of his endurance or been put under more then moderate verbal pressure from PC DIs? Before the decade is out all a candidate will have to do to qualify for Ensign bars is watch a dozen hours of The Military Channel and take an open book test on military protocol.

That sounds suspiciously like NROTC.

Ya ;) Well, at least the NROTC mids go on cruises. The summer cruises may not be all they should or could be, but at least they are exposed to the real Navy in some way.

I think NROTC should go through bootcamp too. I've been in the navy for 7 years, made E-6 in 4, have been an LPO of 90 plus people and I've been out to sea a whole lot.

But with all that I still have to go. I don't care. I think whatever doesnt kill you makes you stronger and even though all of you say OCS is a joke compared to when you went through it, I feel that there's something for everyone to gain from it. Although I know many aspect will be hard, I welcome it.

So I don't care if NROTC kids go through cruises or not, I think that they could use the OCS training just like myself, a 7 year sailor.

Now ya'll are making OCS sound easy... it isn't easy by any means... and spending 5 minutes a night on the internet so you can post on aw, or write an email home is a great morale booster.

And only Secured OC's are allowed to use the internet... jsut like the pay phones in the batts, unsecured have limited hours on Sundays and holidays.
