No more Solo X-C for IFS students?

Does anyone know why the solo cross countries were suspended for IFS students? Now student pilots have to do a flight where their instructor is a "ghost" for what used to be their solo cross country.

Just found out today. There was a crash at ifs mobile. I cant go into detail but word on the street is it'll come up during the safety standdown this Thursday.

Oh, and a "ghost solo" just means your cfi will ride with you but wont talk.

Typical knee-jerk reaction by CNATRA/CNET.

Yup. Every damn time. There was a crash at Milton a couple years ago during IFS. They pulled the plug on that flight school. Everytime someone does something and gets hurt... they don't think "gee, this is why, let's not do it again. Lesson learned." or which is the case most of the time "this person was an idiot", instead they think "oh my god, stop everything! ban it!"

^, ^^ i concur

^^^yeah, i just got that word, too. stalled on takeoff.

i've always thought the IFS program pushed some people to solo too quickly.

Not quite sure how this happens... I did a shotgun solo the same day right before my actual solo, so that they know all you have to do is repeat what you JUST FREAKIN DID.

FYI: The crash in milton a few years back was an engine failure. The guy came up short of the runway and went down in the trees/houses. They heard him say he would try to pitch for the airport but he was too far out. I don't care if you are the best pilot in the world, if you lose your only engine you are going to have a really bad day.

Never judge someone else when you aren't sitting in the cockpit. Pilots with 100's of hours have had "accidents" which people call "pilot error". Ever talked to the pilot ? Do you know what you would have done, not having been there ? Truth is none of us ever know until and unles we have been in EXACTLY the same position, same amount of skill same instructor etc. Just remember we are all in this together. Someday we will all be called an "idiot" by somebody, when we should band together and support each other.

I wasn't armchair quarterbacking anyone. My point was that CNET/CNATRA makes snap decisions, whether it's a bonafide "oh shit accident" or "damn that guy did something stupid".

Yes, I know. See my post responding to 3RDMAW.

Statistical Analysis

Lets see...

(20-some odd flights) x (a gajillion students) = (mishaps are gonna happen)

Being that the powers that be are making this typical knee-jerk reaction, you'd think they're suprised there was a mishap.

I figure that mishaps, tho unfortunate, are expected to happen. You've got how many students flying 20-some odd hours. Sure, not every student in every aircraft is going to have something happen, but odds are something is going to happen to someone at sometime. Its just the way things work. No evolution that's been repeated a gajillion times is totally mishap free.

Its all about benefiet-risk analysis. Not knee-jerk reactions. I'll be interested to see where this goes.

Training

The point is that in over 30 years with aviation and training systems. Whenever there was an incident we did a stand down. Which when I was young and hot blooded I thought "Here we go again". Yet amazing amazing we always found that there was a genuine flaw it what we were doing that hadn't been uncovered. That 100% guys, re-evaluations have saved lives. From hand grenade training in boot camp to advanced tactics, it's unfortunate that someone has to have a "mistake" before we find out, but that's the nature of the business. True no system is foolproof or will ever be, but it is our task to try to make it that way. A little more honesty in training evals would be nice, but everybody wants to just get it over and get in the sky. Good luck to all.
