NROTC 5 years?

Absolutely. I'm not sure why this is so mind-blowing. I've seen a few other posts related to this, and frankly I'm surprised by it. I went to an engineering school, I studied EE. I was the only EE in my ROTC class, the other engineering types were MechE and AeroE, for the most part. Everyone graduated on time, and many of those were also part of sports teams, while holding senior billets in the BN in later years. None of them were geniuses, just hard, dedicated workers. So sac up and do it in 4 years ;) (Unless your school is truly a 5 year program)

At my school about 25-35% of the the handful of guys who actually stayed CE and EE majors (we called them pre-Business for a good reason) took longer than 4 years, and you really don't want to stay longer than that at my school.......

I studied EE after switching over from CS. I did it in 4 years, so does nearly everyone else. Maybe AF guys are weak ;)

I think nearly every tech/eng major here at wisconsin has taken five years, and all have been covered.

Haha there is always the progression isn't there? Ours was EE/ECE to CS to IT... I was wierd, I went the other direction from CS to EE (I was more straight EE than ECE, though I do have a background in ECE/CS). Funny thing is, I forget most of that stuff.

Georgia Tech was a 4 year program. And 21 hrs or more per semester was considered Academic Suicide. 1 of the 50 or so people I know that went to GT got out in the "allotted" 4 years. Everyone else...5th year bennies...

Don't be afraid of the 5th year, but to back up what Fly says...Sac up and make it LOOK like you wanted to be done in 4.

Yeah, I was a 4+ year student at GT too. Started as AE, ended up as ME. Changing majors cost me some time as did GT's switch from quarters to semesters. There were a few semesters I did 18hrs and it was awful. In 5yrs since school, I still have never worked that hard. I had a buddy who did several semesters at 20+ hours. He still took 4.5yrs. If you look like you're busting your ass at school, they'll give you 5th year benefits, and the extra commitment is transparent as an aviator.

some advice. start applying for 5th year benefits as soon as allowed and as soon as you're competitive. they're not giving them away as much as they used to. i'm having to pay for my 5th year (out of state) and it sucks (had to use the entire pre-commissioning loan). i had no choice though, my senior design class is only offered during spring semester. I really only needed one more semester but had to stretch my classes into two because of senior design.

Yep...that was exactly the class that screwed me too (though it is fall and winter term for me)

We had an aero here, it took him 5 years to graduate, even with his 18 hour semesters and 3.8 GPA. So i'm pretty sure the UT program is 5 years.

All the engineers in my class, regardless of their major, picked up fifth year benefits during sophomore year, though some of us were dumb enough to graduate in 4.5. The big thing is whether or not your major actually takes over 4 years to complete. Even then the Navy will (usually) give you the fifth year benefits if you would need an absolutely full load to get it done in 4, not counting the naval science classes you have to take. So long as you are passing you are alright, I think, but it never hurts to be doing well.

With regard to these comments about sacking up and doing it in 4 years and other such nonsense, good God man, don't do it. College is awesome; stay as long as the Navy keeps footing the bill. There is plenty of time to give the Navy its pound of flesh after you graduate.

Marine corps wasn't so generous atleast not at the UWisc-Madison. He was required to finish his school in 4yrs...but the required amount of credits needed each semester made every MECEP graduate in 3yrs. My husband was not very happy. UW is known for MBA and you have to apply to the program after your 2nd year there. You are not guarenteed in and those with higher grades get in before you, so if you are pulling of a 3.5 that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be accepted if someone else has a higher gpa. After talking over with the major he said, it is very rare that they offer extentions. It was rare enough that MECEPS graduated in 4yrs let alone getting another year to stay in. My husband had to settle for Poli sci- it was a guaranteed degree and we wouldn't get the boot out of the program. GRRR.

Umm...I'm going to assume by MBA you mean their undergraduate business curriculum, because an MBA is a post-graduate degree that generally only accepts applicants who have at least 3-4 years of industry experience.

Why was he worrying about an MBA to begin with?

K. SELECTEES WILL TAKE THE MOST EXPEDIENT ROUTE TO RECEIVE A BACCALAUREATE DEGREE AND EARN A COMMISSION IN 4 YEARS OR LESS. ATTENDING GRADUATE SCHOOL IS NOT AUTHORIZED WHILE ENROLLED IN MECEP. DEGREES REQUIRING 5 YEARS TO COMPLETE ARE UNAUTHORIZED. APPLICANTS MAY REQUEST A WAIVER FOR THE PURSUIT OF A TECHNICAL 5 YEAR DEGREE.

Also, what do you mean "guaranteed degree" and "wouldn't get the boot out of the program"?

Two MECEPS at my unit were given 5 years to finish their engineering degrees. It happens, and it didn't seem to be a big deal at all at our unit.
