Nuclear carrier in Japan

This was inevitable. The Japanese SDF and government came to this conclusion a while ago, and they've planned for some time not to oppose it when the time came. I've got an official JMSDF publication that specifically states it. More than that, though, a lot of JMSDF Officers (their version of the CNO down to ENS) see this as tying the US and Japan closer together, which they want. Besides, what's the Japanese government going to say? "Oh, no Mister America, please don't protect us from that raving lunatic who can have his missiles exploding on us in less than an hour." I think not.

I wonder how this will affect the JFK? The KH is supposed to be decommissioned in 08 isn't it?

No, but that is what a very large segment of the Japanese public is essentially saying, as is the South Korean public, for God's sake!

Maybe things have changed in the last two years, but I did not meet one person who was opposed to basing a nuclear-powered carrier or sub there. Granted, there does exist a very left-oriented segment of the population which is speaking out against this, but it's mainly over-privelaged university students. I'm not saying that things could not have changed since I was last there, but I probably would have heard about it from my Japanese host family, who are involved in a pretty wide range of things. My host father, specifically, is the retired Japanese equivalent of the Vice CNO, and he usually mentions things like this in his emails. I'll ask him, just to be sure.

If "atomic bomb: nuclear-powered carrier", then "firebomb: jet engine-powered airplane"

I don't see anyone protesting jet engines!

Oh yeah? Ask our Japanese "hosts" how they like the noise at Kadena. I wonder what the analogous pairing/precursor would be for being gang-raped by some drunken enlisted Marines?

Really, then what explains all those nuke power plants in Japan? They have a problem with a pacifist population that views military power, especially US military power, with disdain. A nuke CV implied nuke weapons. That was the real bur under their saddle. And if some people call it understandable, I consider it naive given their geopolitical situation. Glad the Japanese government has found a couple hanging between their legs.

I said that because when I was there for a MIDN cruise at Yokosuka a couple SSNs were there for a few days, and the Japanese had a boat in the water monitoring the status of the water all the time. The officer who was taking us around the base told us how apprehensive the Japanese were about having nuke powered boats there. Just saying how it was when I was there.

Well, I will say that Roppongi is a hell a lot more fun than Agana (Guam).

I read this on navy.mil. More PR stuff about the kitty hawk being replaced.

http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=20812

Special release from the U.S. Department of Defense

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy announced Oct. 27 that one of its nine Nimitz-class aircraft carriers will replace USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the forward-deployed carrier in the Western Pacific, and will arrive in Yokosuka, Japan in 2008.

Kitty Hawk is nearing the end of its service life and will return to the United States in 2008 to be decommissioned.

The Navy says the JFK was not suppose to be in the message.

Included in the initial list was the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, based in Mayport, Fla., according to Mullen’s message.

However, the Navy rescinded that part of the message on Wednesday, saying it should not have been included.
